Chapter 3 - New Friend?

The girl calmly walked over to a wardrobe in the opposite corner from the bunk beds. She grabbed some clothes and went back into the door and came out.

A couple of minutes later, she came out fully clothed and rushed to me. She cocked back her hand and slapped me.

It knocked me to the floor. When I got up, I had a red hand mark on my face.

"What are you doing in my room, pervert?" Her voice was a whisper, but there was malice in every word.

I held up the key while rubbing the side of my face. "It's my room as well. Director Skye told me this is my room, but she never mentioned I'd have a roommate. Nice to meet you, too."

She narrowed her eyes, then she turned away and climbed up to the top bunk. After she climbed onto her bed, she said, "My name is Lyra."

"Alright then, Lyra," I said, lying down on the couch.

Lyra clicked her tongue. "Director Skye has some nerve putting a guy in here."

"This isn't fun for me either, especially getting slapped, but I didn't come here to peek on you. I just wanted some sleep." I said before letting out a sigh.

She didn't say anything, just glared at me before turning to face the wall.

I couldn't get comfortable on the couch, so I got up from the couch and climbed into the bottom bunk.

Lyra muttered, "Stay down there, you hear me?"

"Loud and clear," I responded simply.

I woke up to the smell of bacon being fried. Still groggy, I sat up and swung my feet off the bed. I looked up to see Lyra cooking.

"Smells good," I said.

"Thank you, my parents taught me when I was younger. What about you? Can you cook?" She asked. Her voice was emotionless.

"No one ever taught me," I said, followed by a thought. Maybe she'll teach me.

"You're thinking I'll teach you, aren't you?" She asked, her voice still emotionless.

"No." I paused, "Yes, I was."

She let out a little chuckle before quickly stopping herself. I cocked my head.

There was a long silence between us, but it wasn't awkward, though.

"I guess you're not too bad." She suddenly said.

"Oh… Um, thank you?" My last words faded into a question. I quickly recovered by asking another question. "So, that reporter on the news yesterday made it seem like the humans weren't fighting in the war, but were collateral damage. What's that about?"

"Have you been living under a rock the past month?" She asked, I could sense a hint of annoyance in her voice.

"You wouldn't believe it, but actually yes, I have been. Well, technically multiple rocks." I chuckled.

She turned around, eyes wide. "Kai Mercer, I know why that name sounds so familiar now. You were buried right next to my parents." She paused, taking a moment to collect her thoughts. "But… how are you here?"

"Again, you wouldn't believe me," I said.

"Try me." She said, still shaken.

I told her my story, except for meeting the six people in the courtroom.

She took some time to digest. "So, you died a month ago, then suddenly woke up in a grave? Then Archibald found you after you got out? Then you both heard a voice come from the grave that said something about not interfering with what you're destined to do? Do you know what it is that you're destined to do? It can't be something small, I imagine."

"No, I don't know what I'm destined to do, but I imagine you're right. After all, I was literally risen from the dead." I knew I wasn't actually dead based on the conversation I had with the figures.

"That's actually insane. I'm speechless." Her voice was calm, though.

"Is the bacon done yet?" I asked, wanting to stop talking about this subject because I, myself, still didn't believe it was real, or maybe I did and I was just convincing myself I didn't.

"Oh shit, I forgot." She turned around to see the bacon burnt to a crisp. She then turned back to me, "I'm sorry, I burnt it."

"It's fine." I was really hungry. I haven't eaten in a month, but I didn't want to make her feel worse.

"About what the reporter was saying," I said.

"Oh, right. The humans weren't originally part of the war until the demons and angels brought the fighting to our doorstep about a month ago. I heard they fought alongside the angels when the war first started, but after most of humanity was wiped out, they decided to withdraw from the war."

"So humans don't possess the power to fight on the same level as angels and devils?" I asked.

"Not until about 500 years ago, the angels gave the humans artifacts to help increase the potential of humans because the angels were losing the war. The strongest humans got sent up to Heaven to receive training from the angels." She paused before continuing, "The most wicked humans got offers from the demons, incentivising the humans to fight for them."

You can never trust a devil, I thought to myself, thinking back to the demon-looking man.

I must've let my distaste for demons show on my face because Lyra spoke up.

"So, you hate demons too?" She asked with a wicked smile.

"I've met one, and... let's just say, he lied to me in our first meeting."

"Well, not all demons are monsters, just like how not all angels are saints." She said.

I just sat there with a puzzled look on my face.

"Wow, you're really naive." She laughed at my expense.

"I think life was better when we were all naive," I said simply.

"Fair enough." Lyra agreed. "Bacon is done by the way."

She must have put some more bacon in the pan while we were talking.

I got up and walked over to the table in the kitchen at sat down across from Lyra. We ate in silence without speaking.

Just as I got up from the table, I heard a knock on the door. Lyra and I looked at each other. We got up and went to the door. Lyra was standing behind me as I opened the door.

"Hello, Kai, Lyra. How are you guys getting along." Director Skye was standing in the doorway.

Lyra and I just looked at each other confused.

"I see you guys are getting along well." She said with a cheeky smile.

"Why are you hear Director?" Lyra asked.

"I came to get Kai, someone wants to see him." Director Skye sounded troubled now.

"Who is it?" I asked.

"They said you would know them when you saw them." Director Skye said.

I just looked at the Director. "Um… alright."

She walked off and I followed. We made our way through the school to and outside to a training arena.

Outside the training arena was beautiful. A road lined with cherry blossom trees with the training arena at the end. The training arena itself was a massive dome that looked like a coliseum. I don't remember this being here, it must be a new addition to the academy.

We made our way through the door of the training arena. There was a person in the middle of the arena just standing there with their back turned.

They had giant 10 white feathered wings that were gold tipped, five on each side of their back.

They turned around, but I didn't recognize them like director Skye said I would.

Along with the ten wings, the angel had short light blonde hair, with sky blue eyes. He was very tall, with a white chest piece with gold accents, and gold gauntlets and grieves.

"Hello, Kai, it's been a while." The angel said.

"Sorry, do I know you?" I asked. I didn't know who this was much less how they knew my name.

"I guess you wouldn't know me, you were so young when that happened." He said, eyes downturned. Then he looked up again and he smiled, "But it's nice to see you again, Kai."

"That?" I asked incredulously. "What are you talking about? How do you know my name? Who are you?" My mind was squirming with questions, I was about to asked another one but my mouth snapped shut when the angel spoke next.

"Now's not the time, we don't have time to talk about that. We need to hurry up and get you to achieve your potential." He said hurriedly. Then he slowed his tone and continued. "The war is progressing faster than any of us has predicted. The demons are getting stronger, we're being pushed back. We're nearing our last line of defense."

"And how are we-," I was cut off by the angel, as he appeared right in front of me. He was much taller and intimidating up close.

"It's simple, we're gonna fight."
