Chapter 5 - 5. A Scandal

The bustling day drew closer, and Laylah gathered her belongings to depart from the coffee shop. It was a hectic day for them, because of the customers they had.

She hailed a cab and headed to the mall to procure some ingredients for dinner. Rose had invited her a couple of times for dinner, but she's never been there.

Last night, after the banquet, Rose asked her to pick a date for them to have dinner, which she agreed to. But then, Laylah thought it would be best to make dinner for her, instead of going out to a restaurant.

"We have arrived, ma'am." The driver informed her, bringing her back to the present. She stepped out of the cab, paid his fare, and turned to the direction of the mall.

Ten minutes later, Laylah had gathered everything she needed for the dinner. She hailed a cab, and headed to the mansion.

Since it was her first time, she asked the cab driver to use a map for a better direction.

Upon arriving at the mansion, she paid the driver and step out.

As she headed towards the gate, she bumped into Rose's driver coming out.

"Good day Sir." She greeted, smiling wholeheartedly.

"Is Mrs. Rose in the house?" She added further, adjusting the ingredients she bought.

The driver returned the smile, recognizing her.

"Yes please, let me take you inside." He directed her into the house, and led her to the living room. They entered to find Rose watching an evening show.

"Madam you have a guest." He informed. Before Rose could spin around, Laylah spoke up.

"Hello, Mrs. Rose." Laylah said. Rose hurriedly stood up and pulled her into a hug, thrilled by the surprise visit she hadn't been expecting.

"I was about giving you a call. I have missed you." She disentangled the hug, and cupped her face in her hands.

"I came to make you dinner." Laylah said, showing her the shopping bag she was holding.

"I'm starving already! Quickly, to the kitchen. The maid will accompany you."

Laylah giggled, dropped her bag, and followed the maid who had been standing nearby.

Liam had warned her to stay away, but she didn't heed to his warning. Rose picked up her phone, and dialed her son's contact. It rang for a few seconds before he answered.

"Hello Mother! Are you okay? Why are you calling?" Liam asked, a bit worried. She usually doesn't call when he's at the office, unless if there's an emergency.

"Nothing. I just wanted to make sure you don't skip dinner. Make sure you come home early."

"Alright mother, I have a pile of work on my desk. But i will leave early to have dinner with you."

"Okay, see you at home." They hanged up.

An hour later, Liam arrived home as promised to have dinner with his mother. He was about to head upstairs when he heard noise of cutlery and plates coming from the dinning room and decided to check if it was his mother.

Upon getting there, he came into view with Laylah setting up the table.

Laylah felt someone's presence. Hesitantly, she lifted her head up, and saw Liam standing.

"Welcome home! You are right here on time, dinner is ready." He ignored her, and turned to leave. Now certain why his mother asked him not to skip dinner.

Laylah wasn't affected, she knew she would see this side of him more often, she kept coming to the house.

Rose came downstairs, and walked to the dining room. "I thought I heard a car? Wasn't that Laim? Sarah go upstairs, and Inform him that dinner is ready."

"Yes ma'am." She responded, and headed upstairs while Rose sat down, smiling.

"I could smell the aroma while you were cooking, you must be a good cook." Rose complimented, making her giggle.

A few minutes later, Laim walked into the dining room dressed in short and a T-shirt.

"Hello mother." He greeted, and lean in to peck her cheeks.

"Welcome home, what took you so long? I was waiting for you."

"I'm sorry! I'm filled, I won't be joining you for dinner." He responded, hoping she wouldn't coerce him further.

"I insist you eat, Laylah came here to make dinner, and now you don't feel like eating."

"Okay fine, I will eat." He said, sitting down while Laylah served him dinner. The two of them chatted as they ate, excluding Liam who wasn't interested.

Ten minutes later, they finished dinner and headed to the living room at Rose's request. Laylah went to the kitchen and returned with some beverages.

"Liam when do you both plan to pick a wedding date?" She breathe out, making the both of them look in her direction. Laylah wasn't expecting it to be this soon.

"A wedding date? At least let's get to know each other, why the rush?" Liam inquiries, clearly pissed.

"Yes. We can go on a date and get to know more about each other." Laylah added, she didn't find it comforting, not so soon.

"There won't be any need for that, just pick a date already. If you don't, I will gladly do it for you."

Liam's phone interrupted, he picked up the phone to see his assistant on the screen. He stood up, excuse himself, and proceeded to pick up.

"Hey Jerry, are you done?" He asks.

"Boss, there's a love scandal of you and the late Ms Amelia. I don't know how it resurfaces on the Internet."

Liam ended the call, checked his phone. He froze at the sight of the headline.

"Mother, we have a problem." He said, handing the phone over to her. Rose paused momentary, before collecting the phone from him.

"How did this resurface? I thought this was buried years back?"

They were in the middle of their conversation when the maid came running, breathless.

"Ma'am, the house is on fire. There's fire from the back." Liam hurriedly followed her to see for himself.

Soon, he returned, "Mother, the three of you need to leave, I will look for a way out."

"We can't leave you here, let's look for a way out." Rose declined. There's no way she's leaving him behind, he's the only child she's got.

"Ms Laylah, you have to leave with my mother. I will make sure to find a way out."

"There's no way out, the entrance is on fire." Rose said, and that was when they realized it.

They were still in the midst of their argument when the door flung open.

"Boss! Madam, are you okay?"

"Take them out, there's something I need to get from inside." He said, and before she could stop him, he was out of sight.

Rose refused to move out, but Laylah was brave enough to push her out of the house.
