Chapter 3 - Being a father

Samuel stared at the door Cecilia had just walked through, his throat dry. The silence left in her wake was loud — almost louder than her confession.

A son.

Five years gone.

And now she walks back into his life with the one thing he didn't know he needed.

The envelope she left sat on his desk like it was made of fire.

He opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a simple drawing. A man in a black suit standing next to a smaller boy with matching hair and eyes. They were holding hands, under a crooked sun.

Samuel felt something crack deep in his chest. He sat down slowly, the drawing still in his hands. This wasn't just any child's scribble.

It was a son's wish.

In the Hallway

Cecilia stood with her back against the wall, breathing hard. Her legs felt like they might give out. Part of her expected Samuel to throw them both out. Or worse, try to take Leo from her in revenge.

Instead, the door creaked open.

"Come in," he said simply.

She stepped back inside, cautiously, and Leo followed, wide-eyed.

Samuel stood by the window now, back to them, the drawing in his hand.

He turned after a long pause. "He's smart. I saw the sketch he did of the office. Every angle was perfect."

Leo beamed. "I like buildings."

Samuel cleared his throat. "You ever seen the top floor of a skyscraper?"

Leo shook his head.

"Then let's go."

Thirty Minutes Later — Blackwood Tower, Penthouse Floor

Cecilia stayed behind while Samuel showed Leo the top floor of the Blackwood building — a glass paradise with views of the entire city.

Leo pressed his nose to the window. "It looks like Legos from up here."

Samuel smirked. "That's what I thought the first time, too."

He crouched beside him, watching his son's awe. A thousand questions burned in his throat: What was his favorite food? His bedtime routine? Did he have nightmares?

Samuel didn't know anything — but he wanted to.

"Leo," he said gently, "if I… if I wanted to spend time with you, would that be okay?"

Leo tilted his head. "You mean like a dad?"

Samuel nodded once.

Leo looked back out at the city. "Can I still stay with Mommy?"

Samuel's chest tightened. "Of course. I would never take you away from her."

Leo smiled and wrapped his arms around Samuel's neck. It was small, sudden, and nearly took Samuel's breath away.

He hadn't known love could hit like this.

Later That Evening — Conference Room

Cecilia sat across from Samuel at a sleek glass table. Leo was in the next room with an iPad and a fruit cup Samuel had arranged like royalty was visiting.

"Say what you need to say," she said. "I know you don't trust me."

Samuel folded his arms. "I don't. But I'm not going to punish Leo for what happened between us."

Cecilia looked down.

"I want shared custody," Samuel said firmly. "If you say no, I'll fight you in court and I'll win. You know I will."

She stiffened. "Don't threaten me."

He leaned forward, voice low. "I'm not. I'm offering you something better."

She narrowed her eyes. "Which is?"

"A fresh start," he said. "For all of us."

Cecilia's Flashback – The Day She Left

She remembered the day she walked out of his life.

Samuel's father had summoned her to a private suite. The old man's words were sharp and clear:

> "You will destroy everything he's worked for. You're a walking scandal, and if you care about Samuel, you'll vanish. This is not your fairy tale. It's a billion-dollar empire."

She had cried on the train out of the city, clutching her pregnancy test and trying to believe it was the right thing.

Now here she was, five years later, facing the same man's son… and wondering if she still belonged anywhere near him.

---

Back in the Present

Cecilia folded her arms. "And what does a fresh start look like for a man like you, Samuel? Private schools? Security guards? Telling Leo who to become before he can figure it out himself?"

Samuel shook his head. "No. A real life. One where I can be part of his world."

She looked at him then — really looked. The suit. The perfect posture. The cold stare he wore like armor.

But behind all that, she saw something different now.

A man who had just met his son… and fallen in love in a single day.

She sighed. "Fine. We'll try shared custody. But you don't get to play power games with me."

Samuel leaned back. "Deal."

"On one condition."

"What?"

She looked him dead in the eye. "You tell Leo the truth. About us. About why I left."

Samuel hesitated.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

That Night — Alone in Her Apartment

Cecilia watched Leo sleep, curled up in bed with a sketchpad on his chest. He'd drawn another picture — this time, of three stick figures: Mom, Dad, and Leo… standing on top of a building.

Her heart twisted.

She didn't know what tomorrow would bring. Samuel could change his mind. The courts could get involved. Her past might come back and ruin everything again.

But for the first time in five years, Cecilia allowed herself to hope.

Because today, her son met his father.

And somehow, despite all the fear, they didn't fall apart.
