CHAPTER 14: Smoke Between Thrones

Duskwatch Fortress – Early Spring

The frost had begun to melt, but the stone walls of Duskwatch still groaned in the cold. In the highest chamber of the war tower, Kael stood over a scroll sealed in black wax. The falcon of House Velmire glared from the crest.

He broke it open with a blade.

The letter was short, but it carried the sharpness of steel carefully sheathed.

> "They move against me now. I stood between you and a holy war. I still can.

If you would see the Empire tremble, then let me stand beside you—not just in words.

The falcon does not fear flame.

Tensions in the Great Hall

Kael sat in council. Myrren read reports. Dren gave patrol rotations. But Kael's mind returned to that letter again and again.

Seyda stood quiet, her veil dark red today.

When the others left, she remained.

"You trust her now?" she asked.

"I trust her ambition," Kael replied.

"That's not the same as loyalty."

"No," he agreed. "But it's something I can use."

Seyda stepped closer, her voice lower.

"She wants a throne. So do I. But not made of lies."

Kael looked at her then—not as a commander, but as something older. Wiser.

"What is it you want, Seyda?"

> "A world that never needed you.

But since it does… I want to make sure it remembers why."

Midnight – Tower of Cinders

Kael stood alone in the highest tower, staring out at the smoke curling from the chimneys of his new kingdom.

A courier approached, breath steaming in the cold.

"More ravens came from Stormmark. They say she's been censured by the Flame Court."

Kael nodded.

"Send this reply," he said, dictating slowly:

> "If they seek to silence you, speak louder.

You have your chance.

Use it wisely.

But do not mistake ambition for immunity."

– K.

Meanwhile – The Flame Grows Restless

In the lower chapel, Seyda knelt before the brazier, hands outstretched.

Acolytes gathered behind her in shadowed silence.

"She walks with knives," one whispered of Virelle.

Seyda's voice, soft but laced with fire, answered.

> "Then let her know — I carry fire. And fire swallows blades."

---

Two Queens on the Board

Back in Stormmark, Virelle read Kael's letter under candlelight. Her brother Kerras watched her quietly.

"He doesn't trust you," Kerras said.

She smiled.

"No. But he needs me."

And in Duskwatch, Seyda watched the flames in the brazier flicker — and whispered:

> "You may court his cause, Lady Falcon. But the flame chose me."
