Chapter 1 - Prologue.

On and off the corridor lights flickered in the dull hallway of my grandmother's mansion. Nana passed away last year, gifting me the parlor. It was nestled at the end of a winding, overgrown path. The old mansion looms like a forgotten relic of a bygone era. Its once grand facade, now weathered and cracked, draped in a tangle of ivy that clings desperately to the crumbling stone. Tall, narrow windows, many of which are shattered or boarded up, peer out like hollow eyes, hinting at the secrets held within. The roof, sagging under the weight of time, is adorned with a tangle of moss and lichen, while the ornate gables and turrets rise defiantly against the sky, their intricate woodwork now faded and splintered.

As you step onto the creaking porch, the air grows heavy with the scent of damp wood and decay. The front door, a massive slab of oak, stands slightly ajar, inviting yet foreboding. Inside, the grand foyer opens up to reveal a sweeping staircase, its banister polished by the touch of countless hands, now dulled by dust. Faded portraits of stern-faced ancestors line the walls, their eyes seemingly following your every move, as if guarding the memories of a long-lost family.

The air is thick with silence, broken only by the occasional rustle of unseen creatures scurrying in the shadows. Each room tells a story of its own: the parlor, with its moth-eaten furniture and cracked mirror, whispers of laughter and gatherings long past; the library, filled with dusty tomes, holds the scent of old paper and secrets waiting to be uncovered. In the dim light, you might catch a glimpse of a flickering candle or hear the faint echo of footsteps, as if the mansion itself is alive, breathing in the history that surrounds it.

Legends speak of ghostly apparitions wandering the halls, their sorrowful wails echoing through the night. Some say the spirit of the mansion's last resident still roams, searching for something lost. As twilight descends, the mansion transforms, casting long shadows that stretch across the grounds, and the air grows colder, thick with the weight of the past. It stands as a haunting reminder of time's passage, a place where the line between the living and the dead blurs, inviting the brave or the foolish to uncover its mysteries.
