"You're right, let's see how this plays out," Chu Mengyao thought Chen Yushu had a point and decided to agree.
She suddenly turned to Uncle Fu and asked, "Uncle Fu, did you get insurance for him? If something happens..."
"Insurance?" Uncle Fu broke out in another cold sweat, thinking to himself that someone Mr. Chu had personally recruited wouldn't get into accidents that easily. But he answered, "Don't worry, everything's been arranged..."
By then, Lin Yi had already walked back to the car, opened the door, sat down, and looked at Chu Mengyao. "How was that? Not bad, right?"
"I guess it passes," Chu Mengyao sniffed.
Lin Yi smiled and settled back into the passenger seat.
He didn't say much more. Experience and the internet had taught him that women were often creatures who said one thing while thinking another. So Lin Yi wasn't about to argue with Chu Mengyao.
Seeing Lin Yi just smile without saying anything else, Chu Mengyao got even more annoyed. She'd expected him to say something grateful!
In today's competitive society, even college graduates end up doing sanitation work, but a migrant worker who'd just arrived in the city had found such a good job—shouldn't he be more excited?
"Hey, don't you have anything to thank me for?" Chu Mengyao finally couldn't hold back and asked with some anger.
"Thank you? For what?" Lin Yi looked a bit confused, thinking to himself: I just knocked down that guy who was bothering you—shouldn't you be thanking me instead?
What do I need to thank you for?
"I..." Chu Mengyao was getting really frustrated. How could this guy be so dense?
She was being so obvious about it, and he still didn't get it? Didn't he know how to butter up his employer?
"Hehe, what Yaoyao means is that since she accepted you, you should show some appreciation," Chen Yushu said with a sly grin, explaining for Chu Mengyao.
"Shu, what are you saying? When did I 'accept' him?" Chu Mengyao was shocked by Chen Yushu's words. That phrasing was way too misleading—it sounded like she'd accepted a confession!
"Nothing much, just that you accepted him as your bodyguard!" Chen Yushu said with a bright smile.
"Oh, thanks," Lin Yi said casually. Actually, aside from this job being a bit weird, he was pretty satisfied overall. At least the pay was good.
"You're... welcome..." Chu Mengyao grudgingly forced out those three words. She was really dissatisfied with Lin Yi's lack of reaction.
This guy was supposed to be my bodyguard? He seemed pretty slow on the uptake.
"Yaoyao sis, I'm heading out. See you tomorrow. You too, Arrow guy."
When the car stopped in front of a villa, Chen Yushu waved to Chu Mengyao and winked at Lin Yi in the front seat before getting out.
Arrow guy? Lin Yi couldn't help but chuckle. That nickname was pretty unique—on par with some of the handles he'd seen online.
Chen Yushu's house was right next to Chu Mengyao's, the two villas facing each other. After turning the car around, they immediately arrived at Chu Mengyao's villa.
With Chen Yushu's encouragement, Chu Mengyao reluctantly decided to accept this migrant worker for now.
But when she saw the migrant worker grab his luggage and try to follow her into the villa, she exploded again. "You... why are you following me?"
Lin Yi looked confused and turned to Uncle Fu. "Am I not staying here?"
"You've got some nerve! No man has ever set foot in my villa!" Chu Mengyao put her hands on her hips and yelled angrily at Lin Yi.
Uncle Fu wiped his sweat. No man had ever set foot in it? Then what am I...
Uncle Fu thought to himself that he didn't mind being treated like a eunuch, but if Mr. Chu heard his daughter say this, what would he think?
Seeing Uncle Fu wipe his sweat, Chu Mengyao realized her words might be misleading and quickly corrected herself. "I mean, no men outside my family have ever entered!"
"Young miss, Mr. Chu said to treat Mr. Lin like a brother... so Mr. Lin will be living in this villa starting today," Uncle Fu said carefully. He knew this young miss's temper all too well.
"What!" Chu Mengyao's eyes went wide as she pointed at Lin Yi in disbelief. "Him? My brother? You've got to be kidding! Uncle Fu, take him somewhere else to live, anywhere!"
"That's not for me to decide... Young miss, this is Mr. Chu's instruction..."
Uncle Fu said awkwardly. After all, he was just a driver. Even though he was Chu Pengzhan's most trusted person, being caught between the master and the young miss was really difficult.
"Forget it, I'll talk to Dad directly!" Chu Mengyao pulled out the latest iPhone from her pocket. She and Chen Yushu had each bought one when it first came out.
Lin Yi looked enviously at the phone in Chu Mengyao's hand. Maybe he should buy one too?
Otherwise, making calls was really inconvenient.
"Dad, it's Yaoyao!" Chu Mengyao said in a sweet voice that made Lin Yi's skin crawl. Who knew girls could sound so cute when acting spoiled?
"Yaoyao? What's up?" Chu Pengzhan was in a company meeting but answered when he saw his daughter's call.
"Well, Dad, what's the deal with this bodyguard you found for me? Did you just randomly hire him from some farmers market?" Chu Mengyao said with some anger. Since childhood, her father had never been this careless about anything.
"You mean Yi? Haha, he's someone Dad specially invited from far away in the Xishan Mountains. He's well-educated, great at kung fu, and most importantly, he has excellent character!" Chu Pengzhan said with a laugh.
"What!" Chu Mengyao couldn't understand what kind of spell this guy had cast on her father to make him use "excellent" three times.
Hearing his daughter's words, Chu Pengzhan thought she was just being coy and said, "Haha, so? Do you like Yi?"
"Like him? No way! First of all, his appearance doesn't meet standards. If he's going to be my bodyguard, he should at least look decent," Chu Mengyao snorted. "And Dad, why are you making him live with me? I'm a girl—isn't that dangerous?"
"Exactly—Dad is thinking about your safety. A girl living alone in a villa worries Dad too. That's why I'm having Yi stay with you. Don't worry, Yi will protect you," Chu Pengzhan deliberately pretended not to understand the real meaning behind his daughter's words.
"I... he..." Chu Mengyao was momentarily at a loss for words after hearing her father's response.
But before she could continue, Chu Pengzhan said, "Alright, Yaoyao, Dad's in a middle management meeting right now, so let's talk later."
With that, he hung up before Chu Mengyao could say anything else.
Chu Mengyao gritted her teeth and stared at Lin Yi with wide eyes.
"Tell me, how did you trick my dad?"
