Chapter 1 - Prologue: Between Birches and Ancient Shadows

Long ago, the continent was divided by a thousand-year conflict, the echo of which resonated between two great kingdoms. To the west stood the Kingdom of Shirakaba, a land of humans, ruled by its cunning and ambitious prince, Ōkami Shirakaba. To the east, shrouded in an aura of mystery and fear, stretched the Kingdom of Kurohane, home of demons, under the iron fist of the Demon King Tsume Kurohane. The latter certainly did not enjoy a good reputation among humans; the demonic invasions that had occurred in recent years had fueled fear and hatred, solidifying the image of the Demon King as an unstoppable threat. For this reason, Prince Ōkami, moved by a desire for glory and perhaps by a dark ambition, had summoned to the palace the most renowned demon hunters of the continent, promising wealth and honor to whoever brought him the head of the Demon King. However, until then, no warrior, no matter how brave, had ever managed to undermine the supremacy of Tsume Kurohane. At the center of these two kingdoms in perpetual conflict, at a point equidistant from their imposing walls, there was a sacred and mysterious place: the White Birch Forest. It was not an ordinary forest, but a sanctuary steeped in ancient magic, where every tree, every blade of grass and every creature pulsated with a primordial energy. There, in the deepest and most protected heart of that enchanted forest, lived a young sorceress, Kaba. With her short silver hair, her large almond-shaped fuchsia eyes and her simple tattered gray dress, she was the guardian of that natural realm, lovingly dedicating herself to healing wounded animals and protecting the balance of the forest. Kaba ardently desired to live in peace and serenity, far from the clashes that tore apart the kingdoms of humans and demons. She knew well that, even if one of the two factions attempted to cross its borders, a powerful magical barrier, erected by her ancient ancestor, would protect the forest from any intrusion. One day, on a morning like many others, the little sorceress Kaba was observing the castle of Shirakaba in the distance, its imposing towers silhouetted against the sky, unaware of the destinies that would soon intertwine between its white birches and the looming shadows of the two kingdoms.
