Nova Ashbourne glanced at his status screen and gave a slight nod. By all accounts, he was an ordinary human — at least physically. His stats were unimpressive, except for one notable outlier: his mental strength, which stood well above the rest. Considering his mutant ability and the fact he reincarnted, it made sense.
Thinking about his ability, Nova let out a soft, tired sigh. He still couldn't fully believe how absurd his circumstances were. Reborn in the Marvel Universe — not just as a bystander, but as a mutant. A literal walking target in a world where gods, monsters, aliens, and megalomaniacs roamed freely.
The revelation had struck him like a thunderclap, his past life's memories returning only recently, triggered by the traumatic loss of his parents in this world.
Suppressing the wave of sorrow that rose within him, Nova forced himself to focus. There was no room for grief right now. Not in a universe this dangerous.
When his memories had come flooding back, so had a surge of fear. He remembered enjoying Marvel movies back in his old life — casual entertainment for a weekend binge.
But he had never been a hardcore fan or comic reader, which left his knowledge fragmented and incomplete. He knew enough to grasp the danger but not enough to predict every threat. And in a world like this, ignorance could be fatal.
Thankfully, he wasn't entirely defenseless. He had cheats. Two of them, to be precise.
The first was his mutant ability — Wish. A terrifyingly potent power on paper, it allowed him to fulfill the wishes of others. Reality itself could be bent, altered, or rewritten to make those wishes come true. Sounds overpowered, right? It was… with one infuriating catch. He couldn't use it on himself. No matter how much he tried, his own desires remained beyond reach. Worse, he didn't gain anything tangible for granting others' wishes — no power-ups, no experience points, not even a sense of satisfaction.
He remembered the fury he'd felt when he'd first realized this cruel limitation. What was the point of holding a godlike ability if you couldn't use it for your own benefit? The only loophole — if it could even be called that — was that he could sometimes word his own wish through the lips of another. But that approach was clumsy, risky, and rarely reliable.
Still, there was a silver lining. His power drew from a unique energy reserve within him, and through careful observation and minor experiments, he discovered that this energy was directly influenced by both his mental strength and physical fitness.
Fortunately, Nova had been diligent about training since childhood. He wasn't bulky by any means, but his lean, well-defined muscles and athletic frame had certainly caught more than a few appreciative glances of opposite sex. He smirked briefly, recalling a particularl MILF… before shaking his head to clear the distracting thought.
Returning his gaze to the glowing status window, Nova focused on the second cheat he'd acquired — his System. Officially, it was called THE MULTIVERSAL TRADER SYSTEM. He had only awakened it today, and though it lacked a system elf, AI assistant, or quirky voice in his head, the knowledge of its functions had been imprinted directly into his mind the moment it activated.
At its core, the system's concept was simple, yet it held staggering potential. Through it, Nova could initiate trade deals with a randomly selected individual from across the multiverse. This could be anyone — a street thug from a cyberpunk world, a medieval sorcerer, a Marvel superhero, a DC villain, a Pokémon trainer, or even a cosmic-level entity. The system chose the counterpart entirely at random, beyond Nova's control.
Once connected, he could propose a trade. The currency could be anything: rare items, forbidden knowledge, powerful abilities, or services. If the other party accepted and the deal was completed, something remarkable would happen — their world would become 'anchored' in the system, granting Nova the ability to travel there freely in the future.
Of course, it wasn't without its limitations. The most significant was the system's strict enforcement of fairness. Every trade had to be balanced, ensuring neither party was cheated or coerced. Nova couldn't exploit loopholes, trick people with technicalities, or force deals through deception. As infuriating as it was at times, this rule also made the system safer in the long run, preventing retaliation from powerful beings he might encounter. It also meant Nova had to get creative — to find deals that would tempt even the most jaded or godlike figures while remaining equitable.
Yes… both his abilities and system were double-edged swords. But in a universe this merciless, having any advantage at all was worth clinging to.
And Nova Ashbourne had no intention of dying a background character.
Not in this world, where background characters die easily.
