Chapter 1 - A New Sword

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The hammer collided with the glowing metal on the anvil. Shawn watched intently as his father, Quinn, flattened the steel out to create a sword for him. Tomorrow was a big day for Shawn, as it would be the day he finally received his class. His father was a blacksmith and he wanted to make a sword for Shawn to use when he received it.

Shawn had turned 16 years old last month and was now able to gain a class of his own. He had been excited for this for the past year and had been practicing with wooden swords in anticipation for it. Every kid in his town dreamed of being an adventurer and slaying monsters, gaining fame and recognition for their deeds. Shawn was no different. He had helped his father with the forge since he was 10 and he was itching to finally go off on his own and explore outside his hometown of Harot.

Shawn watched his father take the steel to the grindstone and sharpen the edge. He was excited to try it out as he had only been allowed to use wooden swords for practice. His father put the finishing touches on the sword and carefully handed it to Shawn, allowing him to admire it.

"So, what do ya think?" Shawn's father asked, hoping his son liked it.

"It's amazing, dad!" Shawn said, looking over every inch of the sword. He gave it a few test swings to see how it felt. It was a steel short sword. It was well balanced and the edge was sharp to the touch.

'I could slay many monsters with this.' He thought with a smirk.

"One more thing, son." His father said as he went back inside to retrieve something. He came out with a leather sheath he had made for the sword to be carried in and handed it to Shawn.

Shawn happily took it and slid the shortsword into the sheath. He then fastened the sheath to his belt, moving around to see how it felt.

"I love it, thank you so much!" Shawn said and hugged his dad. With this sword, he was confident that, no matter what class he got tomorrow, he would be able to slay monsters and beasts with ease.

"I'm going to go to bed a little early tonight, I want to be up bright and early to receive my class tomorrow!" Shawn said to his dad as he went to his house. He couldn't wait for tomorrow. He went to his room and looked in his mirror.

'This sword looks so cool on me!' Shawn thought. Looking in the mirror, he was an average looking guy, not the most muscular but not weak. He had short brown hair, brown eyes, and tanned skin. By most standards, he was just normal. Shawn knew this and he was happy with it. He had friends and he was a cheery guy.

Satisfied with himself, he took the sword and sheath off. He looked out his window and saw the sun beginning to set over the horizon. He changed out of his clothes and climbed into bed. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.
