Chapter 1 - The Fall

Ah… I shouldn't have bitten that bitch back.

My head felt so heavy. My feet dragged against the dirt. Hell, my shoulder still stung…

I turned my head, blood still flowed out of my shoulder.

It's just a single bite? Could it not stop already?

Well, at least I could still walk-

*UGH!*

Not knowing what happened, my back hugged the ground. My head seemed to hit something, but I couldn't feel it properly.

My limbs started moving on their own.

Jerking. Twitching.

It's like someone constantly shoved my body violently. Even my jaw moved on its own. I didn't do any of this.

I can't breathe… Or am I breathing too fast?

I tried shouting, but not even my mouth followed my command. My whole body trembled outside of my control. It refused to listen.

My…eyes… my eyes…? Why was it suddenly so bright?

I can't… I can't see anything!!!

Stop. Stop. Stop. STOP THIS!

Whatever did this to me… please… I beg you… stop… I can't…anymore…

=====

"Please come work at my factory. We may not offer the same benefit as the military, but we can guarantee your safety for the present, and even in the future."

"Ash, don't waste your talent. You heard the guy, we offer the best benefits. Right after you graduate, we will offer tier 1 and tier 2 spellbooks and technique books free for you. Just choose anything, you can have them all."

"Sir Ash, with your capabilities, you deserve to work at a multinational company. You will get all the benefits without the risk of being in the military."

The three people fought. Each of them spewed promises sweeter than any honey you could find on Earth.

For an orphan, even working in an average office job was already fulfilling enough, but the world offered him more.

With his academic and athletic achievements, whatever affinities Ash unlocked, he was guaranteed to excel at everything he chose.

Whether it was elemental, mind, or even a unique affinity, Ash had proved himself enough.

Alas…

"Ashenvald. Null."

The ascension priest declared. His voice boomed throughout the church.

The awakening ceremony was broadcasted to the whole world. Everybody on Earth with a phone could watch it.

And everybody just watched him be declared a Null.

Null. No affinity. Not chosen by the universe.

The factory owner, the military, and the representative of the multinational company all stared with a vacant gaze.

But it didn't take them long to pull out their phones and start making calls.

After the result was out, not a single person responded to Ash's call.

The three people who begged him to join them, the trainer who promised him he could be a world-class athlete, and even his friends who shouted, "Don't forget about me when you reach the top," before.

None of them took his hand as he reached out for someone's, anyone's help.

And as an orphan, nobody would give him unconditional love.

In just a month's time, came the announcement.

"Every Null who couldn't find employment will be drafted for the city's safety mission."

They called it a safety mission, but Ash knew that it was a massive load of shit.

Government agents came to his dorm and picked him up.

Now, Ash sat on the back of a truck with 5 other individuals. Every single one of them didn't awaken an affinity at the ceremony.

They're Null, the same as him.

A girl cried, hugging her knees. The tears never stopped flowing as the truck brought them further and further away from the city.

"Don't worry. You've heard from the agents. As long as we can bring them some valuable information, we will be able to work for the government."

An older man, a few years older than Ash, said as he calmed the girl.

Ash looked away when he heard those words.

The so-called safety mission was a recon mission to one of the fracture zones.

The abandoned land where no humans were able to survive.

There were 7 of them in the world, and one of them was only a few kilometers away from the city where Ash lived before.

This particular fracture zone was a lush forest. One that was teeming with life.

That was if you count mutated creatures that could even kill an awakened human with ease as life.

The older guy saw what Ash was thinking about and turned to him,

"We might not have awakened any powers. We're Null. But we are together. With the 6 of us, we can do it. No. We WILL do it."

The man smiled, the aura around him was as calm as the gentle warm breeze.

Ash nodded. The weight in his chest had been lifted slightly.

'Yes. Humans didn't have magic before. They worked together and supported each other through adversities. Together, we can do this.'

A seed of hope bloomed inside Ash. The suicide mission didn't feel so impossible now.

=======

"Run! I will stay at the back to make sure Jane isn't left behind!"

The 6 people began running for their lives.

Literally.

A mutant wolf, one that had flowers blooming on its back, spotted the group as soon as they entered the fractured zone.

The group had no information about Verdant Necropolis, even Ash only knew it as one of the fractured zones that had a forest environment.

But common sense was enough to know that the wolf, even with pretty colorful flowers on its back, didn't mean, 'Welcome.'

As the only girl in the group, Jane was the slowest of them all.

Ash ran behind her, pushing her to keep moving her feet even when her lungs ran out of air and the muscles in her feet burned.

The group made it out of the forest, back to the spot where the truck dropped them off.

Their only hope was to ask the awakened humans for help.

However, the truck had been long gone by the time they disappeared behind the trees.

Not even their silhouette could be seen on the horizon.

There was no civilization around the fractured zones, they had all been evacuated out of the area.

The wolf inched closer and closer. The hope for survival was almost nonexistent for the 6 people.

But Ash held strong. "We continue running. As far as it takes for the wolf to give up.

Together, we can do thi-"

Ash's words were cut off as a massive blunt force hit him squarely on his chest.

The boot-shaped stain on his chest became apparent as John retracted his feet.

Ash fell onto the ground, his blank eyes staring at the man standing in front of him.
