Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Curious Introduction

It was a quiet night. Our foolish protagonist was sitting on—

"Hey! I'm not foolish, and besides, shut up. Nobody wants to hear you. Let me introduce myself."

The narrator sighed. "Aren't I supposed to... well, whatever, do what you want."

Ahem. My name is Itsumi Matzuri. I'm a Japanese journalist who, since my youth, studied communications. I got a little too curious about my country's secrets... so I had to move to Mexico. But, as luck would have it, poking around the cartels wasn't the best idea either. That little adventure forced me to move to the United States, where, let's just say, I'm not exactly popular with feminist movements and all those propaganda groups.

Still, I decided to become a Private Investigator. Risky jobs, dangerous clients, but hey, it all depends on the paycheck.

So, there I was, lying on my couch, watching TV, when suddenly my computer started going crazy with email notifications. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.

Annoyed, I got up and walked over to my computer, only to see a single message repeated over and over: a location in the middle of a forest, and the following words—

"I know you're ambitious. I have a job you'll love. Investigate this area and I'll pay you $50,000."

Now, let me tell you something. If someone's willing to pay you that much for a job, it's probably because it'll get you killed, or you'll disappear and no one will ever hear from you again. But fifty grand is fifty grand. And it's just investigating a forest. I mean, what could go wrong… right?

So, I grabbed my gear, my camera, my documents, and hopped into my car, heading to the forest as instructed. After an hour of driving, I arrived at the edge of the woods. Time to write a note for control.
