Chapter 1 - chapter 1

Jessica got out of bed and looked outside the window, the early morning sunlight casting a warm glow over the campus. She had always regretted being in college, feeling like she was being forced into a world that wasn't hers. She groaned aloud, frustration and disappointment simmering just below the surface. She looked opposite and saw that the bed was empty, a stark reminder that she was alone in this vast, sprawling dormitory. 'I'm not good at making friends, and my parents knew this, yet they sent me here against my will. And now I don't even have a roommate,' she muttered to herself angrily, the words echoing off the bare walls.

She walked across the college dorm room, her footsteps echoing in the silence. The room was sparse, with only a few personal touches to remind her of home. She stood in front of the window, gazing out at the birds flitting about in the trees outside, their songs a cheerful contrast to her melancholy mood. Then she picked up her book to read; Jessica did this because it was meant to help her visualize and achieve her objectives, which she needed after three years of college without any friends. The words on the page blurred together as she read, her mind wandering back to her parents and the argument they'd had before she'd left for college.

She closed the book and swung her long legs down from the bed, her movements fluid and practiced. She walked to the mirror and stared at herself, smiling weakly. 'I'm Jessica Ventura, I'm a successful and focused, intelligent woman, and I'm lovely, kind, intelligent, and bold.' That's how Jessica always started her morning, repeating the affirmations like a mantra to boost her confidence. But as she gazed into her own eyes, she couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness that had been following her for months.

She always wished she was home with her parents and friends in Miami, basking in the warm sunshine and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. Instead, she was stuck here, in this cold, impersonal place, struggling to make connections with people who seemed just as lost and alone as she was. She went back to the bed and wrapped her face in her hands, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she cried softly. She had always thought she'd get used to the loneliness, but those were lies she told herself so she would feel comfortable, which was now temporary. Now she knew she wouldn't get used to it; college did feel like a prison, a place where she was trapped with no clear escape route.

As she sat there, feeling the weight of her emotions, Jessica reminded herself of the great effort she had to put in for a good result, even though it was against her will. She thought about her parents, their faces etched in her memory, and the sacrifices they'd made for her. She thought about her future, the possibilities and opportunities that lay ahead, and the person she wanted to become. With a newfound determination, Jessica wiped away her tears and stood up, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead."
