Chapter 1 - Gate of Tommorrow

"Code White, an unfamiliar Gate opened, vacate the area immediately!"

A disturbing announcement echoed throughout the entire modern-Victorian town. Speakers positioned every mile ensured that the notice was given to everyone there.

In a short span of minutes, everyone had vacated. It was smooth and flawless; evidently, they had done it many times already.

At the heart of the city, a pale yellow door can be seen, standing out of context. It was mystical and huge, enough for a giraffe to pass through without crouching its neck. Before it could even open, two individuals were already on the scene.

One was a man with long black hair and eyes, wearing disheveled clothes. He was holding a giant scythe that made him look like the Grim Reaper.

With him was a lady with long blue hair and azure eyes, and a neat military uniform, holding a gun with Runic inscriptions on it. She appeared to be a beacon of stability and order.

They stood there, waiting for anything to walk out of the Gate.

"Creak."

As it opened, white smoke first came out, shrouding the figure that was coming out. Only a black silhouette can be seen from outside, but it was enough for the man to rush in and cut it with his scythe.

Clearly, it did not matter what came out. It was only a matter of having it in the line of sight.

"Bang!" A shot came from the lady as well; however, instead of the shadow coming out of the gate, it hit the scythe of the man.

"What in the realms is wrong with you, Cassandra!?" the man asked in protest.

They had been partners for a long time, and he knew without doubt that what she did was deliberate. There was no way she would miss a shot.

"Cool your scythe, Lex. That's a human," she said with a serious expression.

When the mist dissipated, a man of about 2 meters in height appeared before them. He had silver hair and eyes and was wearing an outdated robe, making him look like a recluse scholar.

"Identify yourself," Cassandra ordered as she pointed her gun directly at his face.

The man's eyes squinted a little as he saw the gun, clearly unfamiliar with it. However, when he saw the Runic inscriptions, he quickly realized their function.

Instead of fear or anger, though, he let out a proud smile, "It is good to see that the Gatekeepers are still on top of the game."

The two were taken aback when they heard him correctly identify their affiliation. However, what followed shook them to their core.

"Who in the realms are you, and how do you know that?" Lex exclaimed as he pointed his scythe toward him.

In response, the man before them pulled out a white emblem from the pocket of his robe. It was the same as theirs; he, too, was a Gatekeeper, and one of the highest rankings at that!

...

"Tell me if I got this right. You are a Gatekeeper who entered a Gate known as the Gate of Tomorrow for a reason you refuse to tell us; then, you were imprisoned there for 300 years and only got out now. Now, you are saying that we should trust you because you hold the same objectives we have. Is that correct?" a lady with long black hair and violet eyes asked as she stared down at the man from the Gate, tied up in an interrogation chair.

"Indeed. The same objectives: keep the Gates closed, kill every non-human that comes out of the Gates, prepare for the breaking of the Gates," he recited perfectly.

The lady before him was lost for words. This was the first time she had encountered such a situation.

The sound of knocking interrupted her thoughts as Cassandra entered the interrogation room.

"The badge was clean, Special Agent Raven. It is from the time before badges were linked to Agents, but it is a valid badge - he is one of us," she said.

"I should be off the hook now," he announced before pulling a hidden Plume out of his robe and Inscribing a Rune on his cuffs.

This process only took two seconds, and just like that, he was free.

"Special Agent Zael. I look forward to working with all of you," he said as he stood up and walked away, leaving the two Agents dumbstruck.

"You are working with us?" Raven asked aloud, confused.

There was another person, and the room they just walked into together with Lex, and both were visibly taken aback as well.

"Yes. I mean, 300 years had passed, but I assume as an Agent holding a white badge, I am entitled to stay, right?"

"Yes, according to the Keepers' Law, provision 7: any and all Agents holding a badge of at least white tier are allowed to move freely to any location, station, or department within the jurisdiction of the Gatekeepers," the other person replied before anyone else could.

He had short brown hair and was wearing a pair of eyeglasses, sitting before a huge stack of paperwork.

The three Agents could only stare at him before letting out a huge sigh.

"See? The one with the glasses knows the law," Zael smiled.

"Agent Sky, it's nice to meet you, sir." he stood up and gave a bow, which earned a return greeting from Zael.

Raven gave another sigh before turning back to Zael, "I need to report you to a Supervising Agent, they will have to come and check you out. However, for now, I guess, welcome, Special Agent Zael."
