Chapter 126 - A New Life

May 4th 1939

Sitting in a leather chair positioned in the corner of mine and Rosalie's room, I held a wrapped bundle in my arms, holding it with more care than I had ever held anything else before.

Rosalie was asleep in our bed, exhausted from giving birth to our child.

It was a boy, with the cutest chubby face to ever exist, and a tuft of thin white hair on the top of his head.

He was as normal as any other baby, without any signs of being any different.

I honestly couldn't tell you how long it had been since Carlisle had handed me the child after Rosalie had fallen asleep, it was all just one big blur.

He opened his eyes, his nearly white grey eyes like my own looked up at me.

I smiled down at him, running a finger gently down one side of his face, memorizing this moment, never wanting to forget it.

We had decided on a name close to the beginning of her pregnancy.

Liam.

It had no real meaning to us, just that we liked how it sounded, since Rose didn't want to name our child after either of her parents, and I couldn't even remember the names of my original parents.

If it was a girl we would have named her Lila, but since it was a boy, Liam.

Liam let out a gurgling noise as he smiled up at me with his toothless grin.

"You're quite the happy little baby aren't you." I said quietly in my own baby voice, tickling his chin which made him laugh some more, "Just like your good old dad."

Looking up at Rose, I saw she was still asleep so decided It was time to show Liam the rest of the family.

Leaving the room without making a sound, I brought Liam to the living room, where the vampires were all seated after sitting on the front porch during the whole of Liam's birth.

Everyone watched as I entered, anticipation written on all of their faces.

"Would any of you like to meet him?" I asked, watching them all carefully, my body unconsciously ready for anything.

Not that I believed any of them would do anything to harm Liam, they weren't stupid, but as I would learn, for some reason any time when there was the slightest possibility of danger around Liam I automatically went into a protective mode.

In the end there was nothing for me to fear, as they all held him with great care and without the slightest reaction to the smell of his blood, which was a good thing, because I was on a hair trigger.

Esme was a puddle of emotions, while the rest were more curious than anything.

Once everyone had had their turn holding him, he was back in my arms as I sat on a wooden stool while everyone else sat on the couches that filled the small living room.

"It's good to hear everything went well." Emmett said, with his arm around Evelyn's shoulder.

I nodded my head, "I wasn't too worried anything would go wrong, especially with Carlisle there." I said, giving Carlisle a nod of appreciation.

"I see he has your eyes and hair color. Is there a chance he will be like you?" Esme asked from beside Carlisle.

I looked down at Liam, "we can only hope. But at the moment there's no way to tell until he's older."

"And how's Rosalie?" Evelyn asked, surprising me.

I gave her a slightly raised brow, "she's fine, just tired." I said, surprised she would have asked.

"That's good."

Just then, Liam let out a high pitched squeal that made us all jump.

Looking down at him, I watched with alarm as his non-existent eyebrows knitted together as if he was concentrating with all his might on something.

"What's he doing?" I asked, alarmed and ready to panic.

Carlisle was quickly by my side, looking down at him.

But before Carlisle could say anything, the sound of a diaper being filled filled the room.

"Oh, damn." I said, holding Liam away from me as the stench reached me, forcing me to breathe out of my mouth to escape the acrid smell.

As soon as he finished his…business, Liam let out a giggle.

Turning him to face me eye to eye, I couldn't stop the laugh that escaped my mouth.

"yup, you're definitely my son." I said, making everyone in the room chuckle.

After quickly learning how to change a diaper, we went back into the living room, Esme holding Liam while I drank a cup of coffee.

Only managing two sips of my coffee, we all turned at the sound of my and Rosalie's room door opening.

We had all figured Rosalie would have slept at least a few more hours.

As soon as she stepped into the hallway, only I was able to see down the hallway and the changing in Rosalie.

As soon as she lifted her head to look at me, her blood red eyes pierced into my own, causing me to stop dead, my coffee cup mere inches from my lips.

Not moving, I watched her closely, ready for something to go wrong when she caught my scent, or that of our son.

But as she looked at me, the Red slowly started to recede, becoming a dark yellow, with flakes of brown sprinkled within.

As soon as I saw the change, a small smile spread across my lips. I would be lying if I said I wasn't the slightest worried that she would stay human and she would need to be changed again, the letter from Gib be damned.

Standing from my stool, I set the mug on the seat, waiting as Rosalie slowly made her way down the hallway.

As soon as she came into view of the others in the living room, I heard a collective intake of air as they too saw the changes in Rosalie almost instantly.

Ignoring it, I stepped close to her, watching her closely, looking to see how she was taking the change.

"Well look who finally decided to wake up." I said jokingly, leaning down to give Rosalie a quick peck on the forehead.

She glanced up at me nervously, looking unsure as she glanced at the bundle in Esme's arms.

I gave her a small smile as I turned towards Esme, picking up Liam.

Turning back to Rosalie, I watched her, knowing exactly what was bothering her the most in that moment.

She was afraid that now that she was a vampire again, she couldn't trust herself around our son.

Not needing to think twice, I walked towards Rosalie, stopping just in front of her.

Without saying a word, I held out the sleeping Liam.

"Don't you want to hold our Son?" I asked, giving her a small smile.

She looked up at me, her eyes still filled with worry as she refused to breathe, not wanting there to be an accident.

"It's okay, Rose. There isn't a single other person alive I wouldn't trust more with our child then you." I said, turning to the others in the room, "sorry."

They all gave short nods of understanding.

Turning back to Rose, who still hadn't moved, I took a step closer, pushing the bundle towards Rose, "you might want to hurry up. He's quite the heavy little guy and my arms are getting tired." I said, my arms slowly lowering inch by inch until Rosalie finally grabbed him.

As soon as Liam was in her arms, I turned, grabbing my somewhat still hot coffee from the stool while ignoring the baffled looks on everyone's faces, Carlisles in particular.

Sitting down on the stool, I looked at Carlisle, "what's bothering you, Carlisle?" I asked, taking a sip from my cup.

He tore his eyes away from Rosalie, who was gently swaying as she looked down at Liam, "Uhh…she's…she's a vampire again." Carlisle said, his eyes shooting back to look at Rosalie.

I looked at Rosalie then back at Carlisle, "yeah…she is, isn't she."
