The agent took a step back, running a hand through his hair as he exhaled. "The boss knew Lucas was on the case, but not how far he went," he muttered, repeating Kai's words. He turned his back for a moment, processing everything before spinning around again. "So what did Lucas find out? What was so damn important that you both risked everything?"
Kai remained silent.
The agent slammed his fist on the table again. "Answer me!"
Kai finally leaned forward, his gaze steady. "We found out that the corruption in this agency runs deeper than we thought," he said. "And I think you already know that."
The agent's eyes darkened. "Careful, Kai."
"Am I wrong?" Kai challenged. "Because if you're so desperate to pin the blame on us instead of looking at what's really happening, then maybe you're part of the problem."
For the first time, the agent didn't have a comeback. His jaw tightened, and for a fleeting second, something flickered in his eyes—something uncertain.
