Kai nodded. "Safer than ever. No one's getting near them."
Lucas exhaled in relief. "And Jonathan?"
Kai's smirk faded. He looked away briefly before answering, "Gone. But he won't stay hidden for long."
Lucas closed his eyes, digesting that. "That bastard… He was right in front of me, Kai. After all these years, and I couldn't stop him." His fist clenched weakly against the bedsheet. "I should've pulled the damn trigger when I had the chance."
Kai studied him for a moment before speaking. "You hesitated because you still saw him as your partner."
Lucas let out a bitter laugh. "That was a mistake."
Kai didn't say anything. He just let the silence settle between them. Lucas needed this moment—to accept, to process.
