The silent bedroom door creaked open softly.
Alex, still staring at the sky, closed his eyes and let his breathing slow, making it seem as though he had drifted off to sleep.
In truth, the Blacklight Virus within him was quietly gathering power, ready to react if necessary.
"Not bad. Looks pretty convincing."
A familiar voice murmured, and soon V slipped into Alex's arms.
Catching her scent, Alex opened his eyes, slightly surprised.
"V? Why are you here?"
"What? Don't wanna see me? Fine, I'll go back."
She started to get up, but before she could leave, Alex grabbed her and pulled her back into his arms.
"I was just curious. It's not even midnight yet." He smiled.
From what he knew, nobody in Night City went to bed before midnight.
In this city, the night was when everyone truly came alive — hence the name Night City.
While absentmindedly running her fingers through his stubble, V smirked.
"That brat fell asleep before eleven, so I thought I'd sneak over here."
"She went to bed early? You two didn't do anything?" Alex teased.
V's face flushed pink.
"We just… took a bath together, that's all. She's… well, really pale."
"A rich girl from a corporate family — figures." Alex chuckled, then flashed a mischievous grin.
"But enough about her… let's focus on something more important."
"Shh… keep it down. Don't wake her up."
"Don't worry…"
The next morning, Alex woke up early.
With V no longer beside him in bed, the thought of sleeping in held no appeal.
He grabbed the soaked soybeans from the fridge, added water, and blended them. After that, he poured the mixture into a pot and brought it to a boil.
Once part of the soy milk was set aside, Alex added gypsum powder and coagulant to the remaining portion, setting it aside to cool and solidify.
Since the kitchen had enough pots and pans, Alex decided to whip up some fried dough sticks as well.
After all, as the saying goes: "Food is the stuff of life."
Night City was advanced in many ways, but its food scene couldn't compare to the rich flavors of his past life in China.
With some free time on his hands, he figured making his own breakfast would be worthwhile.
While Alex worked in the kitchen, V and Liana Forrest finally stirred.
V had already freshened up and dressed, but Liana trudged downstairs still yawning, clad in ridiculous-looking bear pajamas.
"Mmm... smells good. What's for breakfast?" she mumbled sleepily.
"Soy milk, tofu pudding, and fried dough sticks."
Without even glancing at her, Alex focused on finishing his meal prep.
"Yes! Finally something other than a Western breakfast!"
Liana's face lit up with excitement.
Ever since arriving in Night City with her mother, she'd been enduring the horrors of the local cuisine.
The unpleasant environment, the lower-quality living standards — she could tolerate those.
But the terrible food? That was just too much.
Hearing about this familiar breakfast spread filled her with rare joy.
But Alex's next words wiped the smile from her face.
"Why are you excited? I didn't make this for you."
"If you want to eat, figure it out yourself. V's job is to protect you, not to feed you."
"Y-You...!"
Liana stood frozen, pointing at Alex, too furious to form a sentence.
But she knew he wasn't wrong.
"V, breakfast's ready."
"On it!"
The two of them eagerly brought the food to the table.
Seeing the big pot of tofu pudding, the pitcher of fresh soy milk, and over a dozen fried dough sticks laid out, Liana couldn't help but grin smugly.
"You liar. You made all this and claim you didn't leave any for me? Hmph, you're just pretending to be tough."
Grinning triumphantly, she grabbed a spot beside V and began to eat.
