Chapter 52 - Not Again!

Daily Meme

 -----

Uraraka activated her Quirk. The weight around them disappeared, the rope tightening slightly as everyone started floating.

"Alright, Ryuu!" she called. "Go!"

I gripped the rope and jumped. The second I hit the air, I yanked down hard, dragging the entire class behind me. The floating effect held as we drifted downward, a freefall enough to make a few people yell.

"This is weird!" Kaminari shouted. "I don't like this!"

"Deal with it!" I yelled back.

Uraraka's hands shook. "H-hurry up! I can't hold it forever!"

"Almost there!"

As the ground got closer, I started loosening my grip on the rope. The others were still weightless from Uraraka's Quirk, but since they were only falling because I was pulling them down, I had to ease up so they would slow down before hitting the ground. Otherwise, they would drop too fast and splatter like a sack of dumbasses.

I let the rope slip a bit, adjusting the force dragging them down. It wasn't perfect, but air resistance would slow them down enough to make it manageable. I, on the other hand, was going to eat shit.

"Hold on!" I yelled, gripping the rope tighter to keep the balance right. The second my feet hit a nearby rock ledge, I pushed off, aiming for a tree. I caught a thick branch, let my momentum carry me forward, then kicked off again to another ledge. The force still wasn't fully dispersed, so my arms burned from keeping the rope steady, but at least it stopped feeling like I was ripping everyone straight into the dirt.

The others drifted lower now, still dropping, but not at terminal velocity. Good enough.

I hit the ground first, landing hard and rolling to absorb some of the force. Didn't matter. My legs still felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to my knees. Now I understand my opponents. Gotta hit harder!

The rest of the class was still descending, but slower now, floating more than falling. They would be fine. But for a good measure, "Puff!" I blew on them. Yep, defo stopped the descent.

"That actually worked?" Kaminari called out.

"Yeah," I muttered, cracking my knuckles. "Shocker."

Uraraka clenched her fists, looking like she was about to hurl from holding her Quirk for so long. She gritted her teeth, trying to hold on just a little longer while the others got close enough.

"Almost there!" Kirishima called.

Mina was grinning. "Man, I thought this was gonna be a disaster."

Mineta was shaking. "You could have killed us!"

"Still could," I muttered, watching the last few of them drift lower.

Uraraka dropped her hands, deactivating her Quirk. The group finally hit the ground, some landing smoothly, others stumbling.

She hunched over, clutching her stomach. "I hate floating for too long."

"Better than dying," Jiro said, stretching out her arms.

Todoroki dusted himself off. "At least it was efficient."

"Yeah," Kirishima laughed, patting Uraraka's back. "That was awesome! You kept it together the whole way!"

She waved a hand. "Barely."

I shook out my arms, flexing my fingers. "We moving or what?"

Shoji was already checking the path ahead. "More trees, but the way is clear for now."

"Yeah, until the next giant dirt monster," Sero muttered.

Bakugo clicked his tongue. "Tch. Like it matters. We blow 'em up and move on."

Momo sighed. "This is supposed to be training, not mindless destruction."

"Same difference," Bakugo scoffed.

Mineta wiped his forehead. "I'm just glad we're not splattered all over the ground."

"You act like I would let that happen," I said.

He pointed at me. "You almost threw Kirishima off a cliff!"

Kirishima waved a hand. "Nah, he saved me."

"After almost telling you to jump!"

"Still saved me," Kirishima grinned.

Mineta groaned. "This class is insane."

"Welcome to U.A.," Sero muttered.

I adjusted my grip on my bat and started walking. "Let's move."

The others followed, stepping through the trees, keeping an eye out for whatever bullshit Pixie-Bob had cooked up next.

Hagakure walked next to me. "Hey, not bad back there."

I raised a brow. "What part?"

"Not killing us."

"Low bar."

She laughed. "Still, you handled it."

Jiro walked up behind us. "I was ready for someone to panic and start flailing mid-air."

Kaminari groaned. "Yeah, that almost happened."

"Almost?" Yaoyorozu said.

He rubbed his neck. "I was seconds away from freaking out."

"Man," Sero said. "You're lucky Uraraka held it together."

Uraraka waved them off. "I had to. If I dropped it, we would all be in trouble."

Iida nodded. "A good lesson in teamwork and trust."

Bakugo clicked his tongue. "Tch. Whatever. Let's just get to camp already."

Tsuyu hopped over a root. "Ribbit. How much further?"

Shoji lifted his head slightly, looking ahead. "Not far. The terrain is evening out."

I groaned. "Finally."

"Don't jinx it," Kirishima muttered.

Too late.

A massive earth beast crashed through the trees.

"Goddamn it," Kaminari yelled.

I twirled my bat. "Alright, who's up?"

Mina grinned. "Iida, you take this one!"

Iida's engine roared to life. "Very well!" He launched forward, dodging a swipe before delivering a solid kick to its leg. The beast stumbled, but it wasn't down yet.

Todoroki raised a hand, ice shooting up to lock its feet in place. "Now."

Iida surged forward again, spinning mid-air before slamming his foot into its head. The ice cracked, and the beast toppled over.

"Nice," Jiro said.

Iida straightened. "A coordinated effort."

"Yeah, yeah," Bakugo muttered. "Let's keep moving."

Another half an hour of hiking later, we finally saw the edge of the forest.

"Finally!" Kaminari groaned.

The clearing ahead showed buildings—camp at last. The smell of food hit like a truck.

Sato perked up. "Food!"

We all picked up the pace.

Aizawa, Mandalay, Ragdoll, Tiger and Pixie-Bob were waiting, smiling. "Not bad, kids!"

Ragdoll waved. "Took you long enough!"

Tiger crossed his arms. "Hope you're ready. Training starts tomorrow."

I sighed. "Of course it does."

Mina stretched. "Man, I'm starving. Can we eat first?"

Pixie-Bob clapped her hands. "Food's ready!"

We didn't need to be told twice. Everyone rushed toward the dining area, finally ready to get a break.

And just as I was about to relax, System happened.

The screen flickered, then added one last message:

[HOPE YOU WEREN'T ATTACHED TO PEACE AND QUIET.]

I groaned. "Goddamn it."

Why, man, why? Can I not have a single peaceful camp trip? Every time, it turns into some kind of bullshit.

Class 1-B arrived with Vlad King, and the briefing started. Mandalay reminded us that we would work hard, train harder, and that cooking would be our responsibility. Class presidents had to schedule meal duty. Yaoyorozu looked at me. I looked at Iida.

"You do it," I said.

Iida straightened. "Understood!"

That was one problem dealt with.

Pixie-Bob clapped her hands. "Alright, brats! Since you all made it, eat up, rest up, and get ready for tomorrow! It's going to be brutal~!"

"How brutal are we talking?" Sero asked.

Pixie-Bob grinned. "Brutal."

Kirishima fist-pumped. "Hell yeah!"

Mineta groaned. "Hell no."

No one cared about his suffering.

We split up. Most of the class was heading toward the baths. Mineta was already eyeing the baths, which meant Shoji had to drag him away before he committed a crime.

Thankfully, the meal was already prepared. We did not have to cook after surviving that hike, the fights, and everything else thrown at us. No one complained. Everyone just ate, cleaned up, and made their way to the baths.
