Chapter 13 - 13. The Power Of Friendship

The news of Marcos' death circulated in the city. It was an unbelievable occurrence. Everyone was in shock. Mr. Cruz saw it was wise to suspend the football tournament. The Rockline College did the same. While in prison, the police continued torturing Chris, forcing him to speak the truth. They believed he had a hand on Marcos' death. When my dad heard the news of Chris' arrest, he got into his van and drove straight to the prison. He didn't even pass by the college to see me. His behavior towards Chris was always more confusing to me. Since Chris and I were young, he treated Chris just as if he were his son.

I was sitting alone in my room, worrying about my actions. Chris was in prison because I failed to control myself. Mariana also betrayed Chris by telling the police about Chris' behavior prior Marcos' disappearance. However, she wasn't sorry for her actions. When I was still in my room, a knock came at my door. I knew the knock was from my friends, so I told them to enter. Jeff entered first, Leticia followed. Mariana, Triana and my girlfriend came last. They stood next to my bed and kept quiet. They looked so disappointed in me. I saw no other way out of it except asking for forgiveness.

Before I could speak, Leticia burst out complaining about my actions. She wasn't choosing words to utter. Jeff tried to calm her, but she didn't listen until Mariana unexpectedly gave her a tight slap, which silenced her. Bitter words followed Mariana's anger. Those words were directed to her sister. She questioned Leticia if she was in her right mind for supporting Chris, whom she believed was a killer. Leticia stood her ground, supporting Chris, and Renata joined her.

Renata stepped in between the sisters and warned Mariana to control herself. They blamed Mariana for ending her relationship with Chris and for telling the police about Chris. Veronica and Triana tried to stop the quarrel by taking neutrality. They believed it wasn't a good time to point fingers at each other. Jeff supported saying that no one was wrong or right. We only needed a way out to support Chris.

After Jeff's words, I told my friends how sorry I was for my actions, and luckily, they understood me. We put aside our misunderstandings and agreed to support Chris. Thereafter, Jeff left us in the room. He said he wanted to sleep while brainstorming everything that happened.

Since it was already after sunset, everyone said their goodbyes and went to their rooms. I expected Veronica to spend a night with me, but she behaved as if she were deaf when I called her. I knew that despite the agreement we had made as friends, she was still angry with me.

After my friends left, I went to take a shower before sleeping. Soon after bathing, Mariana was back in my room. She complained she couldn't sleep, thinking about her actions. I tried to reason with her and promised her we were going to visit Chris in prison. I didn't disclose my dad's visit. She behaved as if she understood while coming closer to me. I hugged her and wished her a good night. She opted to sleep on Chris' bed. I didn't oppose her.

In the morning, we met with our friends at the cafeteria as we had agreed the night before. Veronica didn't realise that Mariana slept in my room, and it was a good thing at that moment because she would've suspected my involvement with her. We agreed to go to prison to protest and join Chris. That day, we didn't attend our classes. We hired a taxi, and it took us to the police station. When Chris saw us, he was surprised.
