Chapter 20 - 20. A New Alliance

Despite Mr. Kenneth's arrest, Chris remained in prison. This was against Kort's expectations. The law saw it fit for Chris to remain behind bars because of the reputation of his name. Most people believed Chris was the devil, so freeing him was going to cause chaos in the city. The top officials saw it better to release Chris only after the wave, which carried the rumors of the devils passed.

Since Marcos' case was closed, Kort had no other job other than returning to where she was. But it wasn't so because the SPD needed her. They needed someone who was going to bust the drug lords in the streets, and they chose her. From the highest offices, Office K drove her back to the SPD station. She was with Officer K because the top officials made them a team. He was her second man in the task that was at hand.

When they reached the station, Kort fast went to the prison cells to see Chris. On reaching the cells, Chris clearly saw it in her face that she carried no good news. Kort broke the news to him, which made him lose hope. She tried to comfort him by making sure he was going to be shifted into a new comfortable cell. Her kindness made him question it. He had never seen someone so caring like her besides my dad. She didn't want to explain herself to him until Chris demanded it. The answer to his questions left him in disbelief. Kort and Chris were siblings. That explained everything to him.

The way my dad trusted her and how she always tried to save Chris. All that made no sense after Chris questioned himself about why my dad kept it a secret. He failed to answer himself, so he disagreed with Kort. Chris believed that if they were siblings, my dad was going to tell him. Kort explained further, stating that they only share a mother. She was the eldest and was living with their mom until my dad called her to come and free him. She explained that when Chris was young, something happened, which made my dad take Chris from his mom and brought him up as his son. Chris got confused even more until Kort told him my dad was going to explain everything to him once he was going to be freed. She said my dad was waiting for the right time.

In the lab, Splendor was having sleep paralysis. He was standing next to Leticia's bed, his hands balancing on his chin while falling asleep. He spent more nights working without giving himself a time to sleep. Thus, he felt like a zombie. On those nights, he was repeating his tests, trying to find the DNA signatures of the fetuses. The results were tallying, coming out inconclusive. He even tried to check if his apparatus was working by checking his DNA signature, and it came out. That gave him many questions. He tried Leticia's blood, and no signature came. Everything wasn't making sense to him. He looked for mine and Chris' samples and didn't find them. That didn't matter to him because he already had an anomaly in front of him about the blood, which didn't show signatures in his experiments. He took his notebook and wrote his discovery before he posted online on his blog. His finding attracted a lot of attention. Everyone was eager for his discovery.

Splendor's post on his blog disturbed Kort and my dad's peace. That made Kort pressure my dad to tell us the truth. I didn't understand their debate. My dad argued, saying he needed Chris to come home first. Learning about Kort and Chris' relationship made me know my dad had a lot of secrets I didn't know. I wondered why he didn't trust to tell me.

As days passed, Veronica came to say goodbye to me after a long time of ignoring me. She and her mother were going back to Rockline City. They believed bad things were soon going to follow in the city, so they wanted to vacate earlier. The security in the borders was becoming tight day after day. My last day with Veronica was a memorable one because we forgot all our quarrels and made love. She left me her bracelet as a token of her love.

The day Veronica left the city, Kort and Officer K had Kelvana on their suspect list of drug lords. Their relationship was improved. They followed Kelvana for three days, spying on him, and he was making suspecting moves. He behaved like a pawn in the game. On the day that followed, they ran after Kelvana when he harshly pressed the gears as if he were running away. They didn't know it was just an act. Kelvana knew they were spying on him. Officer K got confused after seeing that the van drove by Kelvana belonged to Mr. Kenneth. He silently pressed the gears harder, expecting Kort to say something about the van, but she kept quiet. At that instant, Kort's phone rang. She didn't pick it up because she was busy speaking on the radio. They were already in the bush. Kelvana's van was still speeding in front of them.

"Today we are going to catch this son of a bitch," Officer K loudly said.

"Definitely! Just pray… your brother is not involved," Kort shortly responded, seeing my dad's missed call on her phone.

Officer K kept quiet as he saw possibilities because Kelvana was driving his brother's van. He concentrated on the steering. When he took a turn, they saw an abandoned, extensive building. Kelvana had the van parked. They parked from a distance and got off the van. After that, they ran to Kelvana's van. They had their pistols in their hands. Within a few minutes, the police cars flooded the area. Kort led them as they went inside the building. It was dark inside the building with many stacks of sacks. Officer K approved it was the angel dust after he teared open one sack with his knife. The other group of officers reported seeing footprints exiting on the other end of the building and heading into the bush. Kort knew Kelvana was no longer in the building. She encouraged a few of her men to follow her and Officer K as they ran after Kelvana. She left the other officers in the building.

A few minutes after Kort and his few men exited the building, their van exploded unexpectedly. It didn't take time before the extensive building also collapsed. The pressure from the explosion caught them and threw them into the bushes. Dust filled their eyes, and smoke filled their lungs and noise pained in their ears. The explosions that followed were enormous. A cloud of dark smoke rose to the sky. In a distance, closer to them, Kelvana was watching like a hero. He took his phone from his pockets and reported his doings. He didn't know the person he was reporting to. However, the intensity of the voice of the person on the phone made him realize he had a powerful boss, who was not a man but a fearless beast. He reported he killed Kort, Officer K, and some police officers. When he added, he killed my dad too, the roaring voice on the phone chuckled and praised him. The voiced praised him, saying he had killed the devil, and those words confused Kelvana. He asked for clarity, so the man told him that Vega Santino, my dad, was the devil. The man introduced himself as Orionos and gave Kelvana another task to run to meet him at prison, where they would free Mr. Kenneth. Kelvana understood and obeyed the order.

When Kort and Officer K were still on the ground, they heard footsteps close their heads. Kort looked up and saw my dad standing next to them. He helped them to sit upright. No one was hurt, but my dad saw that as a sign that the war was already at play. Officer K was still in the dark, not understanding anything until my dad said Orionos was in town. He asked who was Orionos. My dad looked at Kort before responding to Officer K. Kort nodded her head.

"Orionos is a man who wanted to kill all of you…all of us," he said, lowering his voice, "They may be using knives but the police alone won't win a war against Orionos. He was the devil hunter, expert with the sword, a pro of the ages, and well trained with magic."

"These are tales!" Officer K said.

"Wake up, your jacket has dust. You almost died. Is that a tale?" my dad asked.

He went silent. My dad saw Officer K was still in disbelief of everything that came from his mouth. He had to show who he was in front of him, so he walked closer to Officer K and knelt in front of him. Officer K looked at him impatiently.

"I am Vega Santino, the devil. I survived all the massacres of the devils. Now Orionos is back for me, and he will kill anyone against him," my dad revealed himself.

Officer K instantly became a statue as shock struck him. Everything he believed was a tale was true. However, despite my dad's words, he didn't believe him until Kort told him my dad was telling the truth. After that, my dad told both of them to break their oath and break Chris from prison.
