Chapter 8 - Rumors

Another sleepless night, I got up to make breakfast for Charlie and Bella. Unsurprisingly I ate alone, dad must be sleeping in today. After eating breakfast I took my pills and went upstairs to take a quick shower before Bella. I waited for her to finish breakfast while I played on my Gameboy. When we went outside a sliver Volvo awaited at the front of our house, Edward was there.

"Good morning Bella and Peter."

"Edward what are you doing here?" Said Bella in nervous but glad tone.

"Clearly he's here to greet me Bella, what do you think?", the sarcasm in my voice earned me an elbow to the stomach.

"In that case Bella care for a ride to school? Of course only if your guardian angel Peter here agrees."

"Sure." She said and Edward opened the door for her in a heartbeat.

They both where in the Volvo and rolled down the window to talk, "oh my Bella are you cheating on the truck with a rich and new model, you harlot!"

She spoke in a tired tone, "Edward could give you a ride, right Edward?"

"Of course, Alice would have my head if I didn't offer it." He sighed dramatically.

"No way I'm third wheeling, just give me the keys to the truck Bella."

"No! Peter, mom and Charlie won't allow you to drive without them."

"Either I drive the old timer to school or I tell dad a man with twisted goals came and took my sister away."

"Dad knows the Cullens aren't like that!"

"Well he hasn't met Edward or should I say boyfriend, what are you two exactly, lovers or friends with benefits-"

She tossed the keys at me, "don't do anything dangerous, that's what I get for looking after you." She grumbled.

I smiled at them, "take care of my sister Edward she has a tendency to get herself danger."

"Sure you don't want a ride? Or perhaps you need your own prince charming to pick you up." He grinned.

"Better start moving or I'll hit the back of that expensive car of yours full throttle."

I walked away hearing his comeback, "desperate for some action huh Peter!"

By the time I was inside the truck they were already gone, Edward has that same inclination as his sister to drive without worries. All I could think about was his eyes, they were dark and I swear a month ago they were as golden as Alice's. Remembering his eyes throughout the month, I made the connection that they diminished their golden hue as the days went by. What could it mean? Did they change due to the weather? No, perhaps a medication for an illness, a lack of vitamins? Perhaps, they were all adopted, only Edward and Edythe were real brother and sister. I doubt it's a diet, could be just a very unique gene like those rare blood types in the world. The Cullens, well their dad, Carlisle is a doctor. Could be why he adopted them, for example in case they need a blood trans-fusion and only someone else with their gene is compatible. I sighed knowing that it be best not to poke them about it and just let Alice tell me if she felt comfortable enough.

Should I tell her my own troubles? It was only a few days since we started dating and yet I feel so understood by her. I'll just tell her when the time comes, naturally and when I feel brave enough.

I started up the engine, hearing it's engine come to life. Even if it would only be in a fever dream that the truck could reach 60 it was pleasant to hear it's rumble.

When I arrived to the school parking lot, I heard the students gossiping about the new love birds of the school. I saw Mike glance at me from a far and start to dash towards me. Oh hell no I ain't about to discuss my sister's love life with him. I bolted straight to my class and waited until lunch at least before I spoke with him.

I made sure when we were released for lunch I took my sweet time to make it to the cafeteria. As I was walking through the hallways to the cafeteria I saw Alice waiting by one of the lockers.

"About time you arrived Peter, did you speak to your teacher or something?"

"No, just didn't want to answer to Bella's admirers." I said as I give her small kiss.

She had tinted glasses on and I felt that it was for my comfort. We stared at each other both understanding how pleasant it was to look each other in the eye.

She raised her left eyebrow, "what about yours Peter?"

"Mine?"

"Oh please don't let it get to your head Peter, there's barely one of them. Although too close for my comfort." She teased but I sensed a hit of irritation or jealousy.

"To be fair their ain't competition when it comes to you. But it's nice to know about I suppose."

"Suppose? Is my rabbit thinking about his options?" She raised both her eyebrows this time.

I sensed that my choice of words somehow crossed a line or was about to, "shall we go get lunch then?"

"You hungry or scared Peter?"

"No just saying." I blurted out.

"Perfect then let's go outside I want to try something."

Her tiny frame dragged me outside to the bench I sat on awhile ago. We sat there and Alice was staring at me eagerly.

"Peter do you mind if I hold your hand for awhile, promise you won't ever let go until I say so." She said in a serious tone catching me off guard.

"Alright sure."

"I mean it Peter, say it, promise me you won't let go." I could tell she was dead serious now, despite wearing tinted glasses I felt her eyes where filled with an unknown purpose.

"Fine, I promise not to let go."

"Until I say so?"

"Until you say so boss."

She sighed, "that'll have to do, if this fails I'm blaming your lack of integrity Peter."

"What are you-"

"Shh rabbit I'm busy." Alice said as she stared off into the distance.

I glanced at where she was looking and back at her. The road in front of the school had cars passing by and not much else was going on. Yet when I looked at her I was able to deduce that her gaze was fixed elsewhere. A couple of minutes went by and yet I wasn't able to produce an answer as to what exactly she was doing. I heard rumors from the students that Alice was odd, some described her as aloof to her surroundings, some even insulted her behaviour. If I knew who they were I might have had a word with them.

I wanted to think she was just day dreaming but the more I looked at her focused face the less probable that was. Her face was at least cute to look at when she was serious. Time went by and I started to worry about lunch ending before Alice finished her 'task'.

At some point I began daydreaming when I felt a peck on my cheek. Alice had a large smile on her face showing all her teeth as if she accomplished a great feat. It was beautiful and I couldn't help but grasp her face to kiss her.

She pushed me aside and turned her head away, she was breathing in heavily, "if I could, I would make you mine rabbit." She said while she tightened her grip around our interlocked hands.

"I wouldn't say no to a woman offering a ring." I teased but when I finished, a dejected expression crossed her face.

She stroked my face and rubbed her tumb over my cheek, "hopefully one day."

Her statement was cryptic with a hidden meaning. I was about to ask her for an explanation when the bell rang and lunch ended.

I sighed and she sensed my thoughts, "don't worry Peter, I'll find a way to keep you next to me. After all, today proved to be quite fruitful even if unclear at times."

"I don't understand a word or action you've made though. Could you at least tell me what's got you all worked up, please?"

She pinched my cheek gently, "that's a problem, just give me some time to solve it."

Alice grabbed my hand and pulled me back to school like a dog on a leash. When I made it to art class, she repeated the same scene from lunch.

When class ended she finally decided to offer me an olive branch, "wanna go on a date tomorrow around the evening. It would be good for us."

I felt embarrassed and my face started to redden. My lack of money for a proper date surfaced and it hit me how poor equipped I was for a relationship. Driving her was out of the question as well, Charlie would know about it.

"I could take you for a walk around the forest, show you my favorite parts. I'll drive, no offense but your truck isn't up to par with my standards of speed." She said playfully.

I chuckled, "leave the truck out of it, it's enough knowing Bella cheated on him."

"Fine then I'll see you tomorrow. " and she left to go with her family without hearing my answer. I knew she did it on purpose so I wouldn't give her an excuse. Getting a job should be on my to do list for the next month, I just need to get Charlie on board.

*beep* I flinched and looked behind me only to be irritated with the view. Bella and Edward were smirking at my reaction. These two need someone to humble them. They drove off laughing when I gave them the finger.

The rest of the day went by, at night I did my little prayer and turned on my nightlight. Thankfully I slept without any nightmares and woke up at a reasonable time. Bella made breakfast and school was uneventful. Only bad part being Eric and Mike's remarks on Edward, it was mostly Mike. Jessica was unnaturally kind today and surprisingly no insult came from her mouth. During art class Alice repeated her actions from yesterday, taking my hand in her's without a word to be said.

Only at the end of the day did she speak before leaving with her family, "I'll pick you up later. Emmett is letting me borrow his jeep for our little joy ride." With that said she kissed me good bye.

When I arrived home Bella was no where to be seen, Edward must of taken her somewhere. Surprisingly Charlie was home reading reports at the table. He looked up at me and squinted his eyes, "you alone?"

I scratched my neck nervously, "ya I guess Bella is hanging out with her friends."

"Who drove you home then?" He rested his hands on top of his reports, all his attention fixated on me.

Shit, I knew it was best to come clean furthermore I could at least take the chance to prove myself capable of driving alone.

"No I did."

"Peter-"

"Dad I know I should have asked but I thought it best to ask for forgiveness first then permission."

"That's not what this is about son it's to do with your, *sigh* you know what I mean. It's not that I don't trust you, just rather keep you in the know, safe."

"I can do this dad, I've done it for the past two days."

"Pardon?-"

"I'm capable of it just give me a chance. You know I don't take risks."

He chuckled, resigned but a smile crept over his face, "just drive responsibility, no joy rides either. If Bella can, I prefer her to drive and just if you decide to drive somewhere tell me the destination before hand. Is your date driving you today at least?"

"Um ya, we'll be back before 10."

"8 don't push it, I rather Carlisle think of my son as a respectful and honest man."

"I'll try, thanks dad. I'll go take a quick shower if I'm excused."

"Your excused, and please 'protection'"

"Ahh stop talking good bye."

He chuckled as I left, I waited in my room after showering for Alice to message me she was here. I was halfway done homework when her message arrived, 'come out to play rabbit'.

I made my why downstairs, "she's here cya dad."

Dashing to the front door I heard Charlie, "8 o'clock."

"I'll try!"

When I got outside I heard Alice yell, "get in or you'll miss it if we're late Peter!"

I jogged to the jeep and got in as fast as I could. When I glanced towards Alice my heart stopped. She had her black tinted glasses on, dark leather jacket with a black blouse, with dark blue jeans. A Sliver necklace that fit her outfit perfectly and despite her barley revealing skin she looked incredibly appealing to me.

She grinned knowing full well how I was feeling, then in the next second stepped on the accelerator.

"Not again Alice! Chill my dad could be watching." I gripped my seat belt and held onto dear life as she laughed her way to our date.
