Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Sleep Disturbances

Even after the helicopter completely disappeared, Aiden hadn't snapped out of his daze. He subconsciously touched his lips, as if still savoring the earlier experience.

But another roar from the Nemesis pulled him back to reality.

Looking down from the rooftop, Aiden saw the Nemesis standing in the middle of the street, roaring constantly in the direction the helicopter had left.

At the same time, he also saw that the Nemesis had once again changed shape. Its body seemed even bigger, with more tentacles, and the previously lost muscle tissues had been regenerated.

Fortunately, it was still in its second form. That was good news.

The Nemesis didn't stay long on the street. After losing its target, it quickly left, which made Aiden feel a bit more at ease.

To be honest, he had really been worried that the Nemesis would come after him once it lost its target.

Now it seemed that, although the Nemesis had entered its second form, it hadn't completely lost its reason. It was still carrying out its original plan.

"As expected, Lady Luck always stands on my side," Aiden muttered to himself.

Then he took out a cigarette and lit it, smoking while thinking about what to do next.

After thinking for a while, he decided to go rest and find a place to get some proper sleep.

After nearly a whole day and night of continuous fighting, even with his current physical strength, he was feeling tired.

Besides, it was only early morning of the 29th. There were still over ten hours until the protagonists of Resident Evil 2, Leon and Claire, would arrive.

Rather than waiting around, it was better to rest and recover his strength, to face the upcoming Resident Evil 2 storyline in his best condition.

Thinking of this, Aiden shook his head and left the rooftop via the stairs.

———

Not long after Aiden left, a helicopter bearing the UBCS insignia landed on the rooftop.

"We're late, the target has already left," a UBCS soldier on the helicopter reported to his superior via radio.

"We observed through the Nemesis that only the S.T.A.R.S. member left. That Asian man is still there," said the person on the other end of the radio. "Find him. Catch up with him. Capture him. If he resists, bring back his corpse."

"Understood, sir," the soldier responded, then turned to the other soldiers in the helicopter and said, "Company orders: Find the Asian man named Aiden. If he resists, kill without mercy."

"Yes, sir!"

———

After leaving the warehouse building, Aiden wandered the streets for a while, looking for a suitable resting spot. He walked until dawn began to break, and finally found a hotel that looked decent.

He kicked the door open without hesitation, and without hesitation killed what looked to be the hotel owner who had turned into a zombie. Aiden quickly scanned the keys hanging on the wall and finally chose the best room.

The guest room was on the seventh floor, and the location was pretty good. Opening the window gave a view of most of Raccoon City, which made him very satisfied.

After setting up a warning trap at the door, Aiden hugged his gun and curled up on the sofa, closing his eyes and waiting for sleep to take over.

Before long, Aiden was already drowsy from sleepiness. Just as he was about to sleep peacefully, he suddenly heard a loud roar outside the window.

Aiden abruptly opened his eyes because he had recognized the sound. It came from helicopters, and more than one.

His expression immediately changed. He rolled off the sofa and crouched to run over to the window.

He didn't believe Jill had come to pick him up. With their ability, they wouldn't have made such a grand entrance.

Lifting a corner of the curtain slightly, Aiden looked outside.

Several Black Hawk helicopters bearing the UBCS insignia were hovering above the street. A large number of UBCS security soldiers were rappelling down into the street.

Aiden froze for a moment. Just as he was wondering what Umbrella was planning, he heard a burst of footsteps from upstairs.

He immediately understood what was happening. UBCS soldiers had rappelled into the hotel. These soldiers were clearly after him.

There was no time to think about why Umbrella would go to such lengths to deal with him, or how they found this place. Aiden rushed to the door, opened it, and charged out.

Although the UBCS soldiers didn't know which room he was in, Aiden was well aware they would eventually find him. By then, it would be too late to escape.

In the seventh-floor hallway, Aiden ran directly toward the hotel's emergency stairwell. When he first came up, he had checked the hotel's layout and knew that the stairwell connected to the back door, from which he could reach another street.

But as he was running down the emergency stairwell, a squad of soldiers entering from the back door was climbing up, and they met at the fourth-floor corner.

Because there was only one emergency light on in the stairwell, the lighting was poor, so when they saw Aiden, the soldiers didn't react immediately. Not a single one raised their gun.

This gave Aiden the opportunity to shoot first. He didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. In just a few seconds, he emptied the magazine.

Although it was quick, Aiden hadn't fired blindly. When the gunfire stopped, he was the only one still standing at the corner.

Tossing aside the empty AR15, Aiden picked up an M4 from the ground and stepped over the bodies to continue downstairs, soon reaching the first floor.

Since the squad had been wiped out so quickly, the people outside only heard gunfire and didn't know what had happened inside. So when Aiden exited through the back door, the soldiers standing guard thought he was one of their own. Only after Aiden gunned down several of them did they realize what was going on and fire back.

But by then, Aiden had already stepped into the street. He had no intention of getting entangled with them. After exchanging a few shots, he turned and ran.

Seeing their target escape, the soldiers didn't pursue him. Most of their manpower was still inside the hotel. The ones outside weren't many, and now a few had been taken out by Aiden. They didn't have the courage to chase.

However, even though they didn't dare chase him, they could still call for support via radio. Soon, a light helicopter codenamed "Little Bird" appeared above Aiden's head.

Hearing the roaring sound above him, Aiden didn't even bother to look up. He paused his steps and darted into a nearby shop.

This shop was occupied, but by a zombie. When it saw Aiden enter, it let out a roar and lunged at him, only to be thrown out by Aiden.

Before the zombie could get back up, the hovering helicopter opened fire on it. The rotating machine guns on both sides of the aircraft spat out half-meter-long streams of fire, while soldiers in the cabin opened the doors and joined in the shooting.

By the time the pilot realized they had shot the wrong target, the zombie had already been turned into a pile of meat.

Meanwhile, Aiden had already passed through the store, exited through the back door, and entered an alleyway.

Following the alley out, Aiden smoothly made it to another street, but just as he was about to catch his breath, the light helicopter appeared above him again. The rotary guns on both sides started to spin up.

With no choice, Aiden rushed into another roadside shop, and bullets from the helicopter followed him inside.

Bullets rained down like a storm, chasing right behind him and kicking up waves of dust and debris on the ground.

Fortunately, due to the angle, the bullets didn't shoot straight into the store, so the helicopter quickly stopped firing. But it continued circling above, waiting for him to come out.

In reality, the helicopter wasn't just waiting for him to come out, it was waiting for backup troops to arrive.

Aiden wasn't stupid; he immediately guessed their intent. But now that he was pinned down by the helicopter, he couldn't help feeling anxious.

After thinking it over, Aiden suddenly remembered he had a special card rewarded by the system. Perhaps now was the time to use it.

He took the card out of his card pouch but hesitated, unsure if he should use it.

The card from the Lord God Space could allow him to experience the abilities of the First-Stage Gene Lock. Although powerful, it mainly strengthened individual combat ability. Even if he pushed his body's potential to the extreme, it didn't mean he could take down a helicopter.

'Better save it for later.' After thinking for a bit, he put the card back and started thinking of a new escape plan.

At that moment, a UBCS soldier suddenly burst in.

"Damn it," Aiden cursed, snapped out of his thoughts, and shot the soldier down.

Then, more soldiers rushed in.

Aiden had to keep firing, but as more and more soldiers came in, he was soon pinned down by their heavy fire and couldn't lift his head.

Seeing the UBCS soldiers gradually closing the encirclement, Aiden ignored the helicopter outside. Gritting his teeth, he ran out of the shop and sprinted along the street.

The helicopter quickly spotted him and naturally opened fire, but had to stop again, because the pursuing UBCS soldiers were also in their line of fire. They accidentally took down several of their own men who had rushed out first.

Friendly fire from the helicopter forced the pursuing soldiers to retreat. Seeing their comrades lying on the ground, the remaining soldiers cursed, and some of the more hot-tempered ones even fired at the helicopter in frustration.

Realizing he had angered everyone, the pilot quickly pulled the aircraft higher. Even though he knew rifles were unlikely to bring the helicopter down, he didn't want to take the risk.

The pilot's move gave Aiden enough time to escape. He sprinted with all his strength, and by the time the helicopter resumed pursuit, he had already left the security troops far behind, temporarily neutralizing the ground threat.

Now, he began to think about how to deal with the helicopter above.

In fact, when Aiden was in the army, he had never received formal training on how a single soldier should fight a helicopter, because it simply wasn't necessary. His former instructor once told him: if a lone soldier encounters an armed helicopter, the best outcome is to leave behind a complete corpse.

However, he didn't want to die yet, so he had to find a way to deal with that helicopter.

It was a crazy idea, so Aiden decided to do something even crazier.

Looking at a tall building not far ahead, a plan quickly formed in his mind.

"Hope their piloting skills are good enough… otherwise my plan might not work." Silently murmuring to himself, Aiden accelerated again, rushing toward the building and climbing the stairs.

When he reached the eighth floor, Aiden felt the height was sufficient. He kicked open a room door, fired a few shots out the window, then quickly left.
