Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: A Goodbye Kiss

No doubt about it, the power of a 12.7mm caliber machine gun round was no joke. The moment the bullet left the barrel, it tore apart the tentacles rushing in, then continued its momentum and struck the Nemesis's body.

In an instant, countless blood splashes appeared on the Nemesis's body, and alongside the blood, its muscle tissues became visible.

A body that could resist direct fire from small-caliber bullets was as fragile as paper in front of a large-caliber heavy machine gun.

But the Nemesis was still alive, and hadn't taken any fatal wounds. The intense recoil of the heavy machine gun made every bullet hard to control. Aiden could only do his best to aim at the Nemesis's massive body.

After all, compared to the head, the massive body was obviously easier to hit. But even so, the hit rate was still frighteningly low, so he risked stepping forward a few more steps.

Thud thud thud...

The dull gunfire continued endlessly, and the wounds on the Nemesis's body became more and more numerous.

Completely suppressed by the heavy machine gun, the Nemesis actually had no way to fight back. Very soon, the Nemesis, who was powerless to counterattack, made a move that shocked everyone.

It turned around and jumped off the rooftop, then quickly disappeared from Aiden's line of sight.

It ran away.

However, Aiden was not surprised at all by the Nemesis's escape. As one of the most successful types of B.O.W., the Nemesis was more intelligent than the tyrant.

"Where's that monster?"

The gunfire stopped, Jill and Brad poked their heads out from cover. After not seeing the figure of the Nemesis, Jill loudly asked Aiden in confusion.

When the machine gun started firing, worried about being hit by stray bullets, Jill and Brad didn't dare lift their heads, so they didn't witness that surprising scene.

"It ran away." Aiden tossed aside the M2, shook his arm that was a bit numb from the shock, and said.

"You mean... it escaped?" Jill said in surprise, "Didn't expect it to actually run away. Could it be that it was scared?"

"Not scared." Aiden corrected her wording, "Being scared and running away are two different things. It just ran away, or rather, it just temporarily retreated."

"So it will come back?" Jill frowned. That wasn't good news.

Aiden nodded, "And it will come back even stronger, just like before."

"That's really unsettling." Jill said as she glanced at the M2 on the ground, "You can't carry that thing around all the time."

"Indeed, this thing is too heavy." Aiden suddenly missed the Type 89 heavy machine gun he had used in the army. That thing was light as hell, one person could carry it while running everywhere. It was much more suitable for situations like this.

But all he could do was reminisce, because it was impossible to get one in Country M.

Suppressing his wild thoughts, Aiden walked toward the crashed Pave Hawk.

"What are you going to do?" Jill asked, puzzled, "It can't fly anymore."

"Yeah, but there are still survivors inside." Aiden had already walked up to the Pave Hawk and shouted in response.

Hearing that there were survivors, Jill and Brad also ran over. The Pave Hawk was shot down by the Nemesis while trying to rescue them. They couldn't just ignore the injured.

By the time they ran to the Pave Hawk, Aiden had already dragged the injured soldier out and was checking his body.

"Is he seriously hurt?" Jill asked.

Aiden's face looked a bit grave: "Very serious. Both of his legs are completely broken, and there are signs of internal bleeding."

"The fact that he's still alive is a miracle." He added.

"Seems like God hasn't abandoned him." Jill saw a cross hanging on the soldier's chest and said.

But soon, Jill's expression turned grim. She and Brad exchanged glances and saw the same look in each other's eyes.

Because the soldier, with his legs injured, couldn't walk on his own. If they took him along, someone would have to stay back to care for him.

But in a city full of dangers like Raccoon City, having one less person meant less firepower, and a wounded man who couldn't walk would seriously slow down their pace.

"Don't abandon me."

The soldier had remained conscious the whole time. Seeing Jill and Brad's troubled expressions, he instantly realized what was going on and quickly spoke.

"Of course, we would never abandon you." Jill, being a good cop, quickly comforted the soldier.

Although a woman's voice naturally had more warmth, the soldier clearly didn't believe her much. He still wanted to say something more, but Aiden interrupted, "Don't worry, you'll definitely make it back alive."

Jill looked toward Aiden.

Aiden pointed to the helicopter cockpit and said, "The helicopter's radio still works. We can use it to contact the military rescue team."

Only then did Brad notice that the helicopter's radio was still lit up. He quickly climbed in, took the headset off the dead pilot, and started trying to make contact.

Not long after, Brad came out of the cockpit, bringing both bad news and good news.

The bad news was: although they got in touch with the military rescue team, the military, citing a shortage of helicopters, refused to send another one. They told them to find their own way.

As soon as these words came out, Jill burst into a fit of angry cursing.

"Those damn bastards."

After she finished cursing, Brad shared the good news: after being rejected by the military, he had accidentally contacted another S.T.A.R.S. team member on a public channel.

Barry.

He was also using a helicopter to rescue survivors from Raccoon City, and was very close by.

In fact, Barry's helicopter was very close. Not long after Brad ended the call, a medium-sized utility helicopter appeared over the warehouse building.

The helicopter's cabin door was open, so the people on the rooftop could clearly see a familiar figure waving at them.

"Barry!" Jill also waved hard and shouted his name loudly.

Once the helicopter landed, Barry jumped off and immediately hugged the two of them.

But when it came to Aiden, Barry only gave him a smile, because their relationship wasn't that close. A smile was enough.

"Looks like you've had quite the adventure!"

After the joy of reuniting, Barry glanced at the crashed helicopter on the rooftop. He could imagine what kind of things Jill and the others had gone through.

"Yeah, if we wrote a book about it, it'd definitely be a bestseller." Jill shrugged helplessly.

Then she added, "Barry, give me a hand. Let's get that wounded soldier onboard first."

"There's a wounded soldier?" Barry frowned slightly, surprised. "Brad didn't mention any wounded soldiers!"

When Brad contacted him, he only said where they were. He didn't say how many people or that there was a wounded man. That's why Barry was so surprised.

"Barry, what's wrong?" Jill didn't understand why Barry was so surprised.

Before Barry could answer, Aiden explained in his place. He had already recognized what model the helicopter was.

Dolphin SA365N, a medium-sized general-purpose helicopter. The prototype of the Z-9, but a civilian version.

"This helicopter can't take that many people." Aiden pointed to the wounded soldier lying on the ground, "He alone takes up the space of four or five people. Don't forget how badly hurt he is, he can only lie down."

"We can squeeze in..." Before Jill finished her sentence, she stopped herself. She saw that the helicopter was already full of survivors. After estimating, she realized that once the wounded man was onboard, they could only squeeze in two more people at most, and that was already pushing it.

"Alright." Jill immediately changed her tone, "Let them get on. I'll stay behind."

"No way." Barry rejected her on the spot. "I'd rather leave him behind."

The poor wounded soldier immediately pleaded, "Please, don't leave me."

"Don't worry, we won't." Jill comforted him again, then turned to Barry and said, "His helicopter was shot down trying to rescue us. I can't leave him here. So Barry, take Aiden and Brad and go. I'll find my own way out."

"No." Aiden rejected Jill's proposal. He waved to interrupt her and said, "Don't forget about that monster. It's not dead, and it's targeting you. If someone has to stay, it should be me."

When he mentioned the monster, Jill fell silent. She admitted Aiden had a point. But she didn't want to leave him alone.

"I'll stay with you." Jill thought for a moment and said, "Let Brad go."

Of course, Brad wouldn't agree, he shook his head and refused immediately, "Jill, you must go."

At that moment, a roar came from the distance.

"S.T.A.R.S!"

Hearing that hellish roar, Jill and Brad's expressions changed at the same time.

That monster had come back.

After hearing the roar, Aiden had already carried the injured soldier onto the helicopter, then urged Jill, "Go, there's no time. If we delay any longer, this helicopter will end up like the Pave Hawk."

"What about you?" Jill froze and asked.

"Don't worry. With my skills, I'll definitely survive. Don't forget what I did just now." Aiden said confidently.

Remembering his earlier performance, Jill was finally persuaded. She walked toward the helicopter, turning back with every step.

But soon, she stopped, suddenly turned around, ran toward Aiden, and hugged him tightly. Then, under Aiden's surprised and flustered eyes, she kissed him.

"You must survive," she said after the kiss.

Aiden was left dazed by the kiss, and after a while, he said, "I will."

"Jill, hurry up."

At this moment, Barry on the helicopter was already urging. Jill reluctantly let go of his hand, turned around, and boarded the helicopter.

As the cabin door was slammed shut, the helicopter lifted into the air and slowly disappeared into the night.
