Chapter 18 - The Weekend Escape

The weekend crept up faster than Elena anticipated. All week, she replayed Drew's words over and over again in her mind: "I want to show you something,A place that means a lot to me."

Curiosity burned within her, mingled with a sense of excitement that she couldn't quite contain.

She had no idea where he planned to take her, but she trusted him—and that trust had begun to root itself deeper than she'd realized.

Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, the sun stretching across the sky with an unusual brilliance. Elena was up early, her nerves thrumming with anticipation.

She chose a light floral dress, pairing it with a cream cardigan and ankle boots. A soft knock on her door broke her from her thoughts, and she opened it to find Drew standing there, a grin spreading across his face.

"Morning," he greeted, his eyes sweeping over her with clear appreciation.

"Morning," she replied, stepping out and locking the door behind her. "Are you going to tell me where we're going yet?"

Drew chuckled, shaking his head as he led her to his car. "Nope. It's a surprise."

The drive was peaceful, the city slowly fading into sprawling fields and winding roads.

Drew played soft jazz through the speakers, the music threading its way into their comfortable silence. Elena watched the scenery pass by, fields of wildflowers stretching out toward distant hills.

After nearly an hour of driving, Drew pulled off the main road onto a narrow path flanked by towering oak trees.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns across the hood of his car. Elena leaned forward, her eyes wide with wonder.

"Where are we?" she asked, her voice hushed as if she were afraid to break the spell.

Drew just smiled. "You'll see."

The path opened up into a clearing, and Elena's breath caught in her throat. Before them stood a rustic cabin, its wooden frame nestled comfortably among the trees.

A small lake stretched out just beyond it, its surface shimmering under the sunlight. The entire place felt untouched by time, like a hidden paradise sealed off from the world.

Drew parked the car and hopped out, moving around to open her door. She stepped out, her eyes never leaving the cabin. "This is beautiful…" she whispered.

"It's my dad's old place," Drew explained, his gaze softening as he took in the view. "We used to come here every summer. When he passed, I kept it up. It's…kind of my escape."

Elena turned to him, her eyes shimmering with unspoken emotion. "Thank you for bringing me here."

He reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. "There's more to see. Come on."

They spent the afternoon exploring the area. Drew led her down winding trails, pointing out spots where he and his father used to fish or build makeshift forts out of fallen branches.

The air was thick with nostalgia, and Elena could see how much this place meant to him. It was a glimpse into a part of his life she hadn't known existed.

They took a canoe out onto the lake, Drew paddling smoothly while Elena trailed her fingers in the water.

The silence of the lake was profound, broken only by the soft splash of the paddles and the occasional call of birds.

Drew stopped in the middle, letting them drift as the sunlight danced across the water's surface.

He leaned back, his gaze fixed on the clear blue sky. "I haven't done this in years."

Elena watched him, the peace on his face making her heart ache. "Thank you for sharing it with me," she whispered.

He turned to her, his eyes gentle. "I'm glad you're here."

Their gazes held, the silence between them deepening. Elena's heart fluttered as he leaned closer, his hand coming up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "I've wanted to bring you here for a while," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Why didn't you?" she asked, her breath hitching.

"Because I wasn't sure if I was ready," he admitted, his eyes searching hers. "But now…I can't imagine not sharing this with you."

Before she could respond, he closed the distance, his lips brushing against hers in a tender, lingering kiss that left her breathless.

The world seemed to melt away, leaving just the two of them surrounded by water and sky.

When they finally broke apart, neither spoke. Words would have shattered the fragile perfection of the moment.

They spent the evening by the fire in the cabin, wrapped in blankets as they shared stories of their lives, their dreams, and their hopes.

Drew played soft guitar melodies while Elena listened, her heart swelling with each note.

When the stars came out, they stood by the lake, watching the sky reflect perfectly in the water.

Drew wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I don't think I've ever felt this at peace before," he murmured.

Elena leaned back into him, closing her eyes. "Me neither."

They stayed like that for a long while, wrapped up in each other and the stillness of the night, knowing that whatever came next, this moment would be etched in their hearts forever.
