When we moved in, the old man next door stared at our truck like we were already dead.
He came over with a limp and a face that looked like it had been carved out of old leather.
"There's one room upstairs," he said. "It's locked. Covered in red tape. Never open it. Not even if you hear knocking."
We laughed. Obviously.
Later that night, we found the room.
Door completely sealed in bright red tape. On it, scratched into the wood, was one single word:
"HELP."
At 2:13 A.M.
I woke up to the sound of scratching.Like nails. On wood. Coming from inside the taped room.
Then I heard it.
A voice.
Childlike.Soft.Crying.
"It's so cold in here... Please let me out..."
I held my breath. It got quiet.
Then the voice came again. This time angrier.
"I SAID LET ME OUT!"
Something slammed the door so hard, the walls shook.
I ran. I hid. I didn't sleep.
The next morning... the tape was gone.
But the door was still locked from the inside.
And my little sister?She was standing outside the room.
Holding scissors.
Smiling.
